Why This Chapter Matters
The Indus Valley Civilisation (IVC) is one of the highest-scoring topics in the ancient India section of SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, CPO and RRB NTPC exams. On average this topic alone gives 2 to 4 questions in a General Awareness paper, more if the exam also touches art and culture. Almost every question is a direct fact: which site had the dockyard, who excavated Mohenjodaro, what did archaeologists find at Lothal, in which country is Harappa located today. There is very little scope for interpretation-based questions here, so a clean list of site-feature-excavator combinations wins you marks.
Three sub-topics repeat the most: site identification (site name matched to its unique feature), the excavators and years of discovery, and the debate around the script and the decline of the civilisation. SSC has a clear pattern of asking "which of the following pairs is correctly matched" from site names and their special finds, so this chapter builds around tables you can revise quickly. 1. Discovery and Naming
The Indus Valley Civilisation is also called the Harappan Civilisation, named after the first site discovered, Harappa, on the bank of the river Ravi in present-day Punjab, Pakistan. The site was first noticed by Charles Masson in 1826, and later Alexander Cunningham, the father of Indian archaeology, visited it in 1853 and 1856 without recognising its antiquity.
Systematic excavation began under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), then headed by Sir John Marshall. Daya Ram Sahni excavated Harappa in 1921. Rakhal Das Banerji discovered Mohenjodaro ("Mound of the Dead") in Sindh in 1922. These two discoveries together established that a Bronze Age urban civilisation had existed in the Indian subcontinent well before the Vedic period. In 1924 John Marshall announced the discovery of this new civilisation to the world.
The civilisation is dated broadly from 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE in its mature, urban phase, though early or formative Harappan settlements go back to about 3300 BCE, and late Harappan or declining settlements continue to about 1300 BCE. This dating is largely based on radiocarbon (C-14) dating methods. It belongs to the Bronze Age, since its people knew the use of copper and bronze but not iron.
2. Extent
The Indus Valley Civilisation is the most widespread of the three earliest civilisations of the ancient world, larger in area than contemporary Egypt and Mesopotamia. It stretched from Sutkagendor in Baluchistan (Pakistan) in the west to Alamgirpur in Uttar Pradesh in the east, and from Manda in Jammu in the north to Daimabad in Maharashtra in the south. In terms of shape, the civilisation is roughly triangular, and most of its sites lie in present-day Pakistan and the Indian states of Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan.
Interestingly, more Harappan sites have been found in India than in Pakistan after Partition, largely due to the extensive excavation of sites along the dried-up Ghaggar-Hakra river, identified by many scholars with the Rig Vedic Saraswati river. Rakhigarhi in Haryana, on this river system, is now considered the largest Harappan site by area.
The civilisation is generally divided into three phases:
- Early/Formative Harappan phase (about 3300–2600 BCE): village-based, pre-urban.
- Mature Harappan phase (about 2600–1900 BCE): full urbanisation, standard town planning, script, seals, weights.
- Late Harappan phase (about 1900–1300 BCE): decline of urban features, de-urbanisation, shift eastward.
3. Town Planning
Town planning is the single most distinct exam-worthy feature of this civilisation and is asked frequently in a "which of the following is a feature of the Harappan civilisation" format.
Harappan towns show the grid pattern: streets cut each other at right angles, dividing the town into rectangular blocks. Most sites had two clear parts: a smaller, elevated Citadel on the western side, built on a mud-brick platform, likely used for public buildings and granaries; and a larger, lower Lower Town to the east, where ordinary residents lived. This is seen most clearly at Mohenjodaro and Kalibangan; Lothal and Surkotada, being smaller sites, do not always show this two-part division as sharply.
The most striking feature is the drainage system, unmatched in its own time. Every house had its own soak pit and drain, and these joined larger covered drains running along the streets, built of burnt bricks with periodic manholes for cleaning. Houses were built mostly of standard-sized burnt bricks in a ratio of 4:2:1 (length:breadth:thickness), a ratio still used as a rough SSC trivia point. Houses had a central courtyard with rooms around it, and most had their own wells and bathrooms. Some larger houses had two or more storeys.
Notable structures include the Great Bath at Mohenjodaro, a large watertight tank built of burnt bricks with a layer of bitumen for waterproofing, used probably for ritual bathing; the Granaries at Harappa and Mohenjodaro for grain storage; and the massive Dockyard at Lothal, connecting the town to a channel of the sea for maritime trade.
There is no clear evidence of temples or palaces in the Harappan cities, unlike contemporary Egypt or Mesopotamia, which is itself an important negative fact often tested ("which of the following was NOT found at Harappan sites").

Each major site is associated with one or two distinctive finds. Memorise the site-feature-excavator combination as a set.

A quick trick used by aspirants: sites on the coast or near tidal channels (Lothal, Dholavira, Sutkagendor) are linked to trade and dockyards; sites inland on old river courses (Kalibangan, Banawali, Rakhigarhi) show more agricultural evidence.
5. Seals and the Harappan Script
Harappan seals are among the most photographed artefacts of ancient India and a favourite for picture-based or fact-based MCQs. Most seals are square or rectangular, made of steatite (a soft stone), and show an animal figure with a short line of script above it. The most common animal shown is the unicorn bull (a one-horned bull, actually more like a composite bull). Other animals depicted include the tiger, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo and goat. A notable seal found at Mohenjodaro shows a seated figure surrounded by animals, identified by John Marshall as a proto-Shiva or "Pashupati" seal, though this identification remains debated among historians and should be presented as a proposed identification, not a settled fact, in essay-type answers.
The Harappan script is pictographic, meaning it uses picture-based symbols rather than an alphabet, and it remains undeciphered to this day despite many attempted decipherments. It is generally agreed to be written boustrophedon style, meaning alternating direction: right to left in one line, then left to right in the next. Because the script cannot be read, we do not know the name the Harappans used for their own civilisation, their kings, or their religious beliefs with certainty; everything about their society is reconstructed from archaeological evidence alone. This absence of deciphered writing is one reason the Harappan period is still classified under "proto-history" rather than full history by many scholars, sitting between prehistory and history.
6. Economy
Agriculture was the backbone of the Harappan economy. Wheat and barley were the staple crops. Other crops included peas, sesame, mustard, cotton and, at some sites like Lothal, rice. The Harappans are credited as among the earliest people in the world to cultivate cotton, which the Greeks later called "sindon", a term derived from Sindh. Agricultural tools were mostly made of stone and wood; there is very little evidence of the use of the iron plough, since the civilisation belongs to the Bronze Age. A terracotta plough model was found at Banawali, and Kalibangan gives the earliest evidence of an actual ploughed field, with criss-cross furrow marks.
Animal husbandry included cattle (especially the humped bull, often shown on seals), buffalo, sheep, goat and pig. Evidence for the horse is scarce; the strongest single piece of evidence often cited in exam material is the bone remains at Surkotada, though this point is debated among archaeologists.
Trade was extensive, both inland and overseas, and was based on a barter system, since no true coins have been found at Harappan sites. Weights were made of stone, mostly in a cubical shape, and followed a system based on multiples of 16 (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32...), a fact SSC has tested directly. Standard weights and measures indicate strong state or civic control over trade. Overseas trade connected the Harappans with Mesopotamia; Harappan seals have been found at Mesopotamian sites, and Mesopotamian texts refer to a land called "Meluhha", generally identified with the Indus region, and to intermediate trading points called "Dilmun" (identified with Bahrain) and "Makan". Lothal's dockyard is the strongest single piece of evidence for maritime trade with the Persian Gulf and Mesopotamian region.
Craft production included bead-making (notably at Chanhudaro and Lothal), pottery (mostly red ware painted with black designs), bronze tool and figurine making using the lost-wax technique (as seen in the bronze "Dancing Girl"), cotton and wool textile weaving, and seal carving.
Metal use is another well-tested point. The Harappans knew copper, bronze, gold and silver, but there is no confirmed evidence of iron at any mature Harappan site, which is exactly why the civilisation is classed as a Bronze Age culture. Copper was likely brought in from Khetri in Rajasthan and from Baluchistan, while tin, needed to make bronze, probably came through trade from regions further west or from limited local sources; the exact source of Harappan tin is still debated among archaeologists, so exam material treats it as an open question rather than a settled fact. Gold ornaments have been found at several sites, but gold and silver were used for ornaments and vessels, not for coinage.
7. Society and Religion
Harappan society, based on uniform town planning, weights, bricks and script across a vast area, suggests a well-organised, centrally coordinated urban administration, though there is no direct evidence of kings, palaces or a standing army. Many scholars therefore describe Harappan governance as likely managed by a merchant class, a council, or a priestly elite, rather than a single monarch, but this remains an inference rather than a confirmed fact.
On religion, since the script is undeciphered, all conclusions are drawn from figurines, seals and structural remains. Points commonly tested:
- Worship of a Mother Goddess, based on numerous terracotta female figurines found across sites, suggesting a fertility cult.
- Possible worship of a proto-Shiva figure, based on the Pashupati seal from Mohenjodaro.
- Worship of trees (notably the peepal tree, shown on several seals) and animals (the bull in particular).
- Evidence of fire altars at Kalibangan and Lothal, suggesting some form of fire ritual, though not necessarily linked to later Vedic yajna practice.
- No structure has been confirmed as a temple, which is a key negative point for MCQs.
- Burial practices varied: complete burial (as at the Harappa cemetery), fractional burial (bones only), and post-cremation urn burial, suggesting a mix of practices rather than one single belief system.
8. Decline of the Civilisation
The mature urban phase declined gradually after about 1900 BCE, and by around 1300 BCE most late Harappan settlements had lost their urban features altogether. No single cause is fully accepted; SSC-level material presents this as a set of competing theories, and questions are usually of the "which historian proposed which theory" type.

The most widely accepted modern view combines climatic change (weakening monsoon, river shifts) with internal factors like overuse of resources, rather than a single dramatic invasion. As urban centres declined, populations dispersed eastward and southward into the Gangetic plains and Malwa/Deccan region, carrying forward some craft and agricultural knowledge into the succeeding Chalcolithic and Vedic-period cultures.
