Instituted per the will of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite; first awarded in 1901. Six categories: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences (formally the "Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel," added in 1968). All prizes except Peace are announced in Stockholm, Sweden; the Peace Prize is announced in Oslo, Norway.
