Chapter 8: Grammar, Comprehension and Vocabulary

8.1 Reading Comprehension

Reading Comprehension passages test the ability to understand, infer, and answer questions based on a given text. Key strategies include reading the questions first to know what to look for, identifying the main idea and supporting details, and distinguishing between explicitly stated facts and inferences.

8.2 Error Detection and Sentence Improvement

Error Detection questions require identifying a grammatical error within a sentence (subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, article usage, preposition usage). Sentence Improvement questions ask candidates to select the best-phrased alternative to an underlined portion of a sentence, testing grammar and idiomatic usage together.

8.3 Cloze Test

A Cloze Test presents a passage with blanks, each to be filled from given options, testing vocabulary, grammar, and contextual comprehension simultaneously.

8.4 Para Jumbles

Para Jumbling questions present sentences out of order, requiring the candidate to identify the logically and grammatically correct sequence, typically by identifying the topic sentence and tracking pronoun/logical references between sentences.

8.5 One-Word Substitution and Vocabulary

One-Word Substitution tests knowledge of a single word that captures the meaning of a descriptive phrase (e.g., "a person who loves books" = bibliophile). Building a strong vocabulary, including common synonyms/antonyms and idioms, supports performance across nearly all English sub-sections.
