Chapter 9: Essay Writing and Long-Answer Strategy

9.1 Essay Writing Strategy

Tier 2 essay questions typically draw from broad socio-political, economic, or national-issue themes (e.g., internal security, national integration, technology and society, environment and development). A strong essay follows a clear structure: an introduction framing the topic and thesis, body paragraphs each developing one clear argument or dimension with supporting evidence/examples, and a conclusion that synthesises the argument and, where appropriate, offers a balanced forward-looking perspective. Candidates should practise writing within the allotted time (approximately 60 minutes for the combined Tier 2 descriptive paper) and aim for clear, grammatically correct prose over ornate language.

9.2 English Comprehension Strategy

The English Comprehension component tests close reading and précis-writing skills — candidates should read the passage carefully (often twice), identify the central argument and supporting points, and answer directly and concisely, avoiding unnecessary repetition of the passage's wording where original phrasing is expected.

9.3 Long Answer Questions on Current Affairs/Socio-Political Issues

These questions expect a structured, evidence-based response (typically 200–300 words) addressing a current or socio-political issue — for example, "Discuss the challenges of cybersecurity in India's national security framework," or "Examine the role of technology in modern counter-terrorism efforts." A strong response identifies the core issue, discusses multiple relevant dimensions (e.g., technological, legal, social), and offers a reasoned, balanced conclusion.

9.4 Sample Essay Themes for Practice

Candidates preparing for Tier 2 should practise writing on themes such as: the role of intelligence agencies in national security; cybersecurity and data privacy in the digital age; India's internal security challenges (left-wing extremism, border security, communal harmony); the impact of artificial intelligence on governance and security; and India's evolving role in international diplomacy and regional security cooperation.
