7.2 The Dutch
- Dutch East India Company (VOC — Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) founded in 1602 CE.
- Established trading settlements at Masulipatnam (first factory, 1605 CE, Andhra coast), Pulicat, Surat, Cochin, Nagapattinam, Chinsurah (Bengal).
- Primarily focused on the spice trade of Southeast Asia (Indonesia/Indies), treating Indian trade (mainly textiles) as supplementary/supportive to their main Southeast Asian spice operations.
- Battle of Colachel (1741 CE): Dutch decisively defeated by the Kingdom of Travancore (under Raja Marthanda Varma) — significant as one of the first instances of an Asian power defeating a European colonial naval force decisively; effectively ended serious Dutch ambitions on the Indian mainland.
- Dutch power in India further declined after the Battle of Bidara/Chinsurah (1759 CE) against the English (just after our period's cut-off, but shows continuity) — Dutch commercial interest thereafter shifted decisively to Indonesia (Dutch East Indies).
