1.4 Rashtrakuta Dynasty (c. 753–982 CE) — Deccan
- Founder: Dantidurga — overthrew the Chalukyas of Badami.
- Capital: Manyakheta (Malkhed).
- Krishna I — built the magnificent Kailasa Temple at Ellora (monolithic rock-cut temple, dedicated to Shiva) — architectural marvel, UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Amoghavarsha I (c. 814–878 CE) — greatest Rashtrakuta ruler; author of Kavirajamarga (earliest known work on poetics in Kannada); patron of Jainism; Arab traveller Sulaiman called him one of the four great contemporary rulers of the world.
- Rashtrakutas were skilled in art, architecture (rock-cut caves at Ellora — Kailasa Temple, Elephanta Caves patronage), and literature (Kannada and Sanskrit).
- Constant conflict with Chalukyas of Kalyani (who eventually overthrew them under Tailapa II, c. 973 CE) and with Cholas.
