Number System is the single most foundational chapter in the Quantitative Aptitude syllabus of every SSC and Railway examination. Almost every other topic — Simplification, Averages, Percentage, Time and Work, Algebra, even Data Interpretation — quietly leans on the skills built here: recognising number types, applying divisibility rules in a heartbeat, finding unit digits and remainders without long division, and switching between HCF and LCM at will. A student who is slow at Number System is slow at the entire paper, because every calculation-heavy question secretly routes through it.
In terms of direct weightage, SSC CGL and CHSL Tier-1 papers typically carry 2 to 4 questions directly tagged as Number System (divisibility, HCF-LCM, unit digit, remainders, factors), while SSC MTS carries roughly 2 to 3. RRB NTPC and RRB Group D usually field 3 to 5 questions from this chapter per shift, and the concepts recur inside “simplification” and “series” questions as well. The difficulty level ranges from straightforward (classify a number, find HCF of two numbers) to moderately tricky (remainder of a large power, last two digits of a big exponent, number of trailing zeros in a factorial) — rarely does SSC/RRB go beyond what a well-drilled aspirant can solve in under 45 seconds per question once the tricks in this chapter are internalised.
The good news is that this chapter has a hard ceiling on how “deep” it can go at this exam level — there is no need for olympiad-level number theory. What is needed is speed and zero arithmetic slip-ups. This chapter builds the theory rigorously once, then hands you drilling material — tricks, common mistakes, and 30 fully solved practice questions — so that by the end you can solve any Number System question SSC or RRB has historically asked, well within time.
A practical way to use this chapter: read Sections 2 through 12 once carefully, working out every solved example on paper rather than just reading it — number theory skills are built by hand, not by eye. Then commit the cyclicity table (Section 5), the divisibility rules table (Section 4), and the HCF×LCM identity (Section 7) to memory so they are instant recall on exam day; these three alone resolve the majority of Number System questions across SSC and RRB papers. Finally, work through the Shortcuts section (13) and the two practice sets (15 and 16) under a timer — SSC/RRB Tier-1 papers give roughly 45–50 seconds per question on average, and Number System questions, once the tricks are internalised, should typically take 20–30 seconds, banking you extra time for harder DI or Algebra questions elsewhere in the paper.
