Example 1: In the number 8,459, find the place value and face value of 4. - Face value of 4 = 4 - Position of 4 is hundreds place → Place value = 4 × 100 = 400

Example 2: In the number 3,07,215, find the difference between the place value and face value of 7. - Digits: 3(lakhs) 0(ten-thousands) 7(thousands) 2(hundreds) 1(tens) 5(units) - Place value of 7 = 7 × 1000 = 7000 - Face value of 7 = 7 - Difference = 7000 − 7 = 6993

Example 3: Find the sum of the place values of both 5’s in the number 55,050. - Digits: 5(ten-thousands), 5(thousands), 0(hundreds), 5(tens), 0(units) - Place values: 5×10000 = 50000; 5×1000 = 5000; 5×10 = 50 - Sum of place values of the digit 5 appearing thrice = 50000 + 5000 + 50 = 55,050

Example 4: Find the sum of the place values of the digits 7 and 9 in the number 7,28,943. - Digits: 7(lakhs), 2(ten-thousands), 8(thousands), 9(hundreds), 4(tens), 3(units) - Place value of 7 = 7 × 1,00,000 = 7,00,000 - Place value of 9 = 9 × 100 = 900 - Sum = 7,00,000 + 900 = 7,00,900

Example 5 (Missing-digit variant): The difference between the place value and the face value of a digit standing in the hundreds place of a number is 693. Find the digit. - Let the digit be d. Place value = d × 100; face value = d. - Difference = 100d − d = 99d - 99d = 693 → d = 693 ÷ 99 = 7 - Check: place value of 7 in the hundreds place = 700; face value = 7; difference = 700 − 7 = 693 ✓
