Chapter 6: Computer Fundamentals, Hardware/Software & Networking
6.1 Computer Fundamentals and Generations
A computer processes input through the Input-Process-Output cycle. Computer generations are broadly classified by their core technology: First (vacuum tubes), Second (transistors), Third (integrated circuits), Fourth (microprocessors), and Fifth (AI-based systems, ongoing).
6.2 Hardware Components
Hardware includes the CPU (Central Processing Unit — the "brain," comprising the Control Unit and Arithmetic Logic Unit), RAM (volatile memory used for temporary data during active processing), ROM (non-volatile memory storing firmware), and secondary storage devices (HDD, SSD). Input devices (keyboard, mouse, scanner) and output devices (monitor, printer) complete the physical system.
6.3 Software Categories
System software (operating systems like Windows, Linux, macOS) manages hardware resources and provides the platform for other software to run. Application software (word processors, spreadsheets, banking applications) performs specific user tasks. Utility software (antivirus, disk cleanup tools) maintains and optimises system performance.
6.4 Networking Basics
A network connects computers to share resources and data. LAN (Local Area Network) covers a small area (office, building); WAN (Wide Area Network) spans large geographic areas (the Internet being the largest WAN). Key networking concepts include the IP address (a unique numerical identifier for a device on a network), DNS (Domain Name System, translating domain names to IP addresses), and common protocols like HTTP/HTTPS (web browsing, with HTTPS being the encrypted/secure variant) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
6.5 Banking-Relevant Computer Concepts
Given the RBI Assistant exam's banking context, additional emphasis is placed on cybersecurity basics (firewalls, encryption, phishing awareness), e-banking concepts (internet banking, mobile banking, ATM/Core Banking Solution systems), and common MS Office application usage (word processing, spreadsheets for basic financial tabulation).
