Chapter 11: Project Planning, Equipment, and Safety

11.1 Bar Charts (Gantt Charts)

A bar chart (Gantt chart) represents project activities as horizontal bars plotted against a time scale, showing each activity's start and finish time. Bar charts are simple to prepare and understand but do not explicitly show the interdependencies between activities, a limitation addressed by network techniques like CPM and PERT.

11.2 CPM (Critical Path Method)

CPM is a deterministic network-based project scheduling technique used where activity durations are known with reasonable certainty (common in construction projects). It identifies the "critical path" — the longest sequence of dependent activities determining the minimum project duration — and computes float/slack for non-critical activities, indicating how much they can be delayed without affecting the overall completion date.

11.3 PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique)

PERT is a probabilistic technique used where activity durations are uncertain, using three time estimates per activity — optimistic, pessimistic, and most likely — to compute an expected duration, typically via the formula: expected time = (optimistic + 4×most likely + pessimistic) / 6. PERT is more commonly associated with research and development projects, while CPM is more common in construction.

11.4 Float/Slack

Total float is the amount of time a non-critical activity's completion can be delayed without delaying the overall project completion. Free float is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the start of any succeeding activity. Activities on the critical path have zero float.

11.5 Construction Equipment

Common earthmoving/construction equipment includes bulldozers (for clearing and rough grading), excavators/backhoes (for digging), scrapers (for cutting, hauling, and spreading earth over distances), graders (for fine grading), and compactors/rollers (smooth-wheeled, pneumatic-tyred, and sheepsfoot types, each suited to particular soil types). Concrete-related equipment includes batching plants, mixers, vibrators, and pumps.

11.6 Construction Safety

Construction site safety practices include use of personal protective equipment (helmets, safety harnesses, boots), scaffolding safety checks, excavation shoring/bracing to prevent collapse, and adherence to relevant safety codes and regulations. Common site hazards include falls from height, excavation collapse, equipment-related injuries, and electrical hazards.

11.7 Quality Control

Quality control on construction sites involves testing of materials (cement, aggregates, steel) against IS specifications, slump tests and cube-crushing tests for concrete quality, and supervision of workmanship at each construction stage to ensure conformity with drawings and specifications.
