Chapter 6: Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics and Irrigation Basics

6.1 Properties of Fluids

Density (mass density, ρ) is mass per unit volume; for water, standard density is 1000 kg/m³. Specific weight (unit weight, γ) is weight per unit volume (γ = ρg); for water, this is approximately 9.81 kN/m³. Viscosity is a fluid's resistance to shear/flow, described by Newton's Law of Viscosity; kinematic viscosity (ν) is the ratio of dynamic viscosity to density.

6.2 Fluid Flow Concepts

Bernoulli's Theorem, a form of the energy conservation principle for ideal (incompressible, non-viscous) fluid flow, states that the sum of pressure head, velocity head, and elevation head remains constant along a streamline (assuming no energy losses). Continuity Equation (A1V1 = A2V2 for incompressible flow) expresses conservation of mass in a flowing fluid — as cross-sectional area decreases, velocity must increase to maintain constant flow rate, and vice versa. Flow is classified as laminar (smooth, orderly, low Reynolds Number, generally below about 2000 for pipe flow) or turbulent (chaotic, high Reynolds Number, generally above about 4000 for pipe flow), with a transitional zone in between.

6.3 Flow Measurement

Common devices for measuring flow rate include the Venturimeter (based on the principle of pressure difference created by a gradual constriction in pipe flow, applying Bernoulli's equation), the Orifice meter, and, for open channels, weirs and notches (e.g., rectangular and triangular/V-notch weirs, whose discharge formulas relate flow rate to the head of water over the weir crest).

6.4 Irrigation Engineering Basics

Irrigation is the artificial application of water to land to assist crop production. Key methods include surface irrigation (flood, furrow, and border methods), sprinkler irrigation, and drip irrigation (the most water-efficient method, delivering water directly to the root zone, minimising evaporation and runoff losses). A canal conveys irrigation water from a river or reservoir to agricultural fields; a weir or barrage across a river raises the water level to divert flow into a canal head, with a barrage (having gates) allowing more controlled regulation than a plain weir.
