Chapter 8: Highway, Railway & Bridge Engineering

8.1 Highway Engineering

Indian highways are classified into National Highways (NH), State Highways (SH), Major District Roads (MDR), and Village/Rural Roads, with National Highways carrying the highest traffic volumes and connecting major cities/state capitals. A typical highway cross-section includes the carriageway (pavement), shoulders, camber (a slight cross-slope, typically 1.5–3%, given to the road surface to facilitate drainage of rainwater), and kerbs. Flexible pavements (bituminous/asphalt-surfaced, distributing load through a layered granular structure) and rigid pavements (cement concrete, distributing load through slab action/flexural strength) are the two principal pavement types, each with distinct design approaches. Camber types include cambers formed by straight lines, a parabolic curve, or a combination of both.

8.2 Geometric Design Concepts

Sight distance — the length of road visible to a driver — includes Stopping Sight Distance (SSD) (minimum distance needed to stop safely) and Overtaking Sight Distance (OSD) (distance needed to safely complete an overtaking manoeuvre). Superelevation is the transverse slope provided on a curved road (raising the outer edge relative to the inner edge) to counteract centrifugal force and improve safety and comfort at design speed.

8.3 Railway Engineering

The standard/broad gauge in India is 1676 mm (5 feet 6 inches), among the widest gauges used worldwide, alongside metre gauge (1000 mm, now largely converted) and narrow gauge (762 mm and 610 mm, used on a few hill/heritage lines). A railway track's main components include rails, sleepers (which maintain gauge and transfer load to the ballast — traditionally wooden, now increasingly prestressed concrete (PSC) sleepers), and ballast (crushed stone providing drainage, load distribution, and track stability). Gradient on railway tracks is kept gentle (much gentler than highways) since train wheels have lower friction/adhesion with rails compared to rubber tyres with road surfaces.

8.4 Bridge Engineering Basics

Bridges are classified by span and structural system: culverts (very short spans, typically under 6m, for minor drainage crossings), minor bridges, and major bridges. Structural types include beam/girder bridges, arch bridges (carrying loads primarily in compression through the arch shape), truss bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and suspension bridges (used for very long spans, with the deck suspended from main cables anchored at towers). Bearings at bridge supports accommodate movement (thermal expansion/contraction, minor rotations) between the superstructure and substructure.
