Chapter 3: History, Polity, Geography, Economy & Science

3.1 Indian History

The Indus Valley Civilisation (major sites: Harappa, Mohenjo-daro) was followed by the Vedic Period, the Mauryan Empire (Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka), and the Gupta Empire (India's "Golden Age," Aryabhata, Kalidasa). Medieval India saw the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire (Babur, Akbar, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb). Modern India's freedom struggle included the Revolt of 1857, the founding of the Indian National Congress (1885), and movements led by Mahatma Gandhi (Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, Quit India), culminating in independence on 15 August 1947.

3.2 Indian Polity

The Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950, with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar chairing its Drafting Committee. India has a parliamentary system with a President (ceremonial head of state) and Prime Minister (head of government). Parliament comprises the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The Supreme Court, headed by the Chief Justice of India, is the highest judicial authority.

3.3 Indian Geography

India is the world's most populous country and the seventh-largest by area, bordered by Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Major physical features include the Himalayas, the Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Thar Desert, and the Deccan Plateau. Major rivers include the Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Indus (Himalayan) and the Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada (peninsular).

3.4 Indian Economy

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), established in 1935, is India's central bank. The services sector is the largest contributor to India's GDP. The Union Budget is presented annually, typically on 1 February. Key banking terms include the Repo Rate (rate at which RBI lends to banks) and NPA (Non-Performing Asset).

3.5 General Science

Core General Science topics include Newton's Laws of Motion, the periodic table (organising elements by atomic number), photosynthesis (plants converting light energy into chemical energy), and DNA (carrying genetic information). Basic computer literacy topics include RAM (volatile working memory) versus ROM (non-volatile permanent memory).
