Why This Chapter Matters
Nobel Prize questions show up almost every year in SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, and RRB NTPC GK sections, and they are some of the easiest marks in the paper if you have the laureate list clean in your head. Examiners love this topic because it rewards precision: get the year, category, or nationality one digit or one word wrong, and you have handed away a free question.
The single biggest mistake aspirants make here is mixing up who was born in India with who was an Indian citizen when they won. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born in Lahore (undivided India) but won as a US citizen. Har Gobind Khorana was born in Punjab but won as a US citizen too. Mother Teresa was born in Skopje (now North Macedonia) but won as an Indian citizen, because she took Indian citizenship decades before the prize. Examiners exploit exactly this gap between birthplace and citizenship-at-time-of-award, so this chapter tags every laureate clearly on both counts. Read the table twice before you move to the MCQs at the end.
1. What the Nobel Prize Actually Is
The Nobel Prize traces back to the will of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish chemist and industrialist who invented dynamite. He left the bulk of his fortune to fund annual prizes for people who had done the "greatest benefit to mankind." The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, five years after Nobel's death in 1896.

Exam trap: the Economics prize is NOT one of Alfred Nobel's original four categories. Its full name is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, funded by Sweden's central bank and first awarded only in 1969. SSC questions sometimes test whether you know it is technically a separate, later addition, not an "original" Nobel Prize. Treat it as a Nobel Prize for scoring purposes, but remember the naming nuance if a question specifically asks which prize was not part of Nobel's original will.
Four different institutions decide the winners, and this division of labour is itself exam-worthy:

Exam trap: the Peace Prize is the only one decided in Norway and handed out in Oslo. All five others are Swedish institutions, decided and awarded in Stockholm. Nobel wanted Norway involved in the Peace Prize specifically, most likely because Norway and Sweden were a joint union in his lifetime and Norway's parliament had a reputation for supporting peace movements. Students often assume all Nobel Prizes are Norwegian because "Nobel sounds Scandinavian" and lump everything under Oslo. Do not make that mistake.
Memory hook: think of it as "5 in Stockholm, 1 in Oslo" — five prizes stay with Sweden (Nobel's home country), and only Peace travels to neighbouring Norway.
2. Why India Cares About This List So Much
India has produced or is linked to a small, tightly countable set of Nobel laureates, and because the number is small, exams can and do ask about every single one of them, in detail. Unlike a topic like "Padma Awards" where hundreds of names blur together, here you genuinely can memorise the entire list cold, and that is exactly what this chapter helps you do.
Think of the Indian Nobel list like a short guest list at a wedding you're hosting — because there are only a handful of names, every host (and every examiner) can recall exactly who came, when, and why. That is the opposite of a "first in India" list with hundreds of entries; here, completeness is realistic and expected.
3. The Complete India-Linked Nobel Laureate List
This is the table to master. "India-linked" in SSC/RRB usage covers people born in India, people who held Indian citizenship at the time of the award, and people of Indian origin who won as citizens of another country.

Exam trap: Rabindranath Tagore was the first Asian to win a Nobel Prize, not just the first Indian. This "first Asian" phrasing is a favourite exact-wording trap. He won for Gitanjali, a collection he had himself translated into English.
Exam trap: C.V. Raman remains the only person to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences while working entirely in India, doing the actual research in Kolkata (then Calcutta) that led to the discovery of the Raman Effect, announced in 1928 and awarded the Nobel in 1930. Contrast this with Khorana, Chandrasekhar, Ramakrishnan, and Banerjee, all of whom did their Nobel-winning work after emigrating and taking foreign citizenship.

Say the surnames in order a few times and the sequence locks in, because each stop is decades apart and easy to place once you know the chain.
Two more names you will see in "linked to India" discussions
Two other laureates are sometimes mentioned in coaching material because of an India connection, but they are British nationals, not Indian, and questions on them usually test exactly this distinction.
- Ronald Ross, Physiology or Medicine, 1902 — a British doctor who discovered that the Anopheles mosquito transmits malaria, while working in the Indian Medical Service in Secunderabad. He was British, not Indian.
- Rudyard Kipling, Literature, 1907 — born in Bombay (now Mumbai) to British parents, but held British citizenship throughout. He wrote The Jungle Book.
Exam trap: "born in India" and "Indian laureate" are not the same thing. Ross and Kipling did their formative or working years in India but never held Indian citizenship, because India itself did not exist as an independent nation-state with its own citizenship until 1947, well after both men had already left or died (Kipling died in 1936; Ross in 1932). If a question says "first Nobel laureate connected with India," the safe, commonly accepted SSC answer is Ronald Ross, since his prize-winning research happened on Indian soil before Tagore's 1913 win; but if the question specifies "first Indian" or "first Indian citizen," the answer is Rabindranath Tagore.
4. Laureate Profiles — What Each One Is Famous For
Rabindranath Tagore (1913, Literature). Wrote Gitanjali ("Song Offerings"), a collection of devotional poems, and personally translated it into English before its London publication. He also composed India's national anthem, "Jana Gana Mana," and Bangladesh's national anthem, "Amar Shonar Bangla" — a fact examiners love pairing with his Nobel win.
C.V. Raman (1930, Physics). Discovered that when light passes through a transparent substance, some of the scattered light changes wavelength — the Raman Effect. He made this discovery in Kolkata using ordinary sunlight and simple laboratory equipment, which is part of why Indian science communicators treat this as the ultimate "genius on a shoestring budget" story. India celebrates National Science Day on February 28 every year to mark the day in 1928 Raman announced this discovery.
Har Gobind Khorana (1968, Medicine). Born in a small village in undivided Punjab (now in Pakistan), he later became a US citizen and helped decode how the sequence of nucleotides in DNA determines the sequence of amino acids in proteins — foundational work for modern genetics and biotechnology.
Mother Teresa (1979, Peace). Born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje, she moved to India, founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata in 1950, and devoted her life to caring for the poor, sick, and dying. She took Indian citizenship, which is why she counts as an Indian laureate despite her European birthplace — exactly the reverse pattern of Chandrasekhar and Khorana, who were India-born but foreign citizens when they won.
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1983, Physics). Nephew of C.V. Raman. Worked out the Chandrasekhar Limit, the maximum mass a white dwarf star can have before it collapses further into a neutron star or black hole. He proposed this as a young researcher in the 1930s, faced sharp resistance from senior astronomers of the time, and was vindicated decades later — a genuinely good story if you need to remember why the "limit" matters.
Amartya Sen (1998, Economic Sciences). Won for his contributions to welfare economics, including work on social choice theory and a famous analysis showing that famines are rarely caused only by a shortage of food; they are usually caused by a breakdown in how food gets distributed and who can afford it — directly informed by his boyhood memory of the 1943 Bengal famine.
Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (2009, Chemistry). Born in Tamil Nadu, later a US and UK citizen, he shared the Chemistry Nobel for mapping the detailed atomic structure of the ribosome, the cell's protein-making machinery. He later served as President of the Royal Society, London.
Kailash Satyarthi (2014, Peace). Shared the prize with Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan, making 2014 the first time an Indian and a Pakistani shared a Nobel Peace Prize together, "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education." Satyarthi founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save the Childhood Movement) and has rescued thousands of children from bonded labour and trafficking.
Abhijit Banerjee (2019, Economic Sciences). Born in Kolkata, later a US citizen, he shared the prize with Esther Duflo (his wife) and Michael Kremer "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty," using randomised control trials, a method borrowed from medical drug trials, to test which anti-poverty interventions actually work on the ground.
5. Prize Structure, Money, and the Ceremony
Every Nobel Prize carries three components: a medal, a diploma, and a cash award. The cash sum is set by the Nobel Foundation and has been revised upward several times; recent prizes have carried an award in the range of roughly 10 to 11 million Swedish Kronor per full prize, split among co-winners when a prize is shared. Exact figures move over time, so if an exam question gives a specific rupee or dollar conversion, treat it cautiously; the safe, durable fact to remember is that the amount is set in Swedish Kronor and revised periodically by the Foundation, not fixed forever.
The award ceremonies happen every year on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death in 1896. Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Economic Sciences are presented in Stockholm; the Peace Prize is presented separately in Oslo, usually with the King of Norway in attendance for the Oslo ceremony and the King of Sweden for the Stockholm one.
Exam trap: a Nobel Prize can be shared by up to three people in the same year for the same category. It cannot normally be awarded posthumously, except in specific rule-permitted cases where the person died after the announcement was made but before the ceremony. It also cannot be split across different achievements within a category beyond three names — a common wrong-option trick is "shared among four scientists," which should immediately raise suspicion.

Exam trap: Marie Curie won in two different sciences (Physics and Chemistry). Linus Pauling also won two Nobel Prizes, but one was Chemistry and the other was Peace, not two sciences — a frequently confused pair in "who won two Nobel Prizes" questions.
Exam trap: Einstein's 1921 Physics Nobel citation specifically credits his explanation of the photoelectric effect, a concept tested separately in Physics sections. Many students assume it was for the Theory of Relativity, which the Nobel committee never awarded him for, partly because relativity was still considered unproven and controversial by some physicists at the time.
7. Putting It All Together — The Pattern Examiners Test
Look at the shape of the whole list and you will notice a pattern that helps you sanity-check any new option an exam throws at you. Every Indian Peace laureate (Mother Teresa, Kailash Satyarthi) worked directly with vulnerable people inside India: the poor and dying, and child labourers. Every Indian science laureate (Raman, Khorana, Chandrasekhar, Ramakrishnan) worked on a fundamental, almost invisible-to-daily-life mechanism: light scattering, the genetic code, stellar collapse, and protein synthesis. The two Economics laureates (Sen, Banerjee) both built their Nobel-winning work around real, measurable poverty and welfare outcomes, not abstract theory alone.
This pattern will not answer a question for you directly, but it is a useful gut check: if an option claims an Indian Peace laureate for "space research" or a Physics laureate for "poverty alleviation," you can eliminate it on pattern grounds alone even under time pressure.
