Passed by Governor-General Lord William Bentinck, with strong support from Raja Ram Mohan Roy and the Brahmo Samaj.
Declared the practice of Sati (widow immolation) illegal and punishable as culpable homicide in Bengal Presidency; extended to Madras and Bombay Presidencies in 1830.
One of the earliest and most significant social legislative reforms in colonial India.
Faced opposition (e.g., Dharma Sabha led by Radhakanta Deb) but was upheld by the Privy Council in London (1832) after an appeal.
