Understanding the Exam Before You Sit For It

This information is typically published in the official notification, and internalising it precisely, rather than working from a vague impression, allows you to build a realistic time budget well before exam day rather than improvising one under pressure. To get genuine value from a mock test, it must be taken under conditions that mirror the real exam as closely as circumstances allow: a single uninterrupted sitting for the full duration, without pausing the timer, without reference materials, and ideally at roughly the same time of day your actual exam is scheduled for, since your alertness and concentration naturally vary across the day and it helps to have practised performing at the specific hour your real exam will demand. Treating a mock test casually — taking breaks mid-test, looking up an answer you are unsure of instead of making a genuine attempt-or-skip decision, or stopping partway through when you feel tired — undermines the entire value of the exercise, because it is precisely the discipline of sustained, undistracted focus across the full duration that a mock test is meant to train.
Equally important as taking the mock test itself is the review that follows it, and this review deserves at least as much time and attention as the test-taking itself, if not more. A superficial review that only checks your total score misses almost all of the useful information a mock test can provide. A thorough review works through every question you got wrong and asks, specifically, why you got it wrong — was it a genuine knowledge gap (you did not know or could not derive the correct method), a careless error (you knew the method but misread the question, miscalculated, or selected the wrong option by mistake despite solving correctly), or a time-pressure error (you understood the question but rushed and made an avoidable mistake because you were watching the clock)? Treating all wrong answers identically, and simply resolving to "be more careful next time" without this diagnostic breakdown, produces far slower improvement than this targeted review process.
It is also worth reviewing questions you answered correctly but slowly, or correctly but with low confidence (you guessed correctly, or arrived at the right answer through a long, inefficient method), since these represent hidden inefficiencies that a pure score-based review would never surface, yet they quietly eat into your available time on every subsequent attempt until addressed. Keeping a simple running log across multiple mock tests — noting which topics repeatedly produce wrong answers or slow answers — lets you see patterns across tests that are invisible from any single test's review alone, and this cross-test pattern is usually the most reliable guide to where your remaining preparation time is best spent.
Exam-Day Logistics and Composure
A substantial amount of avoidable underperformance in competitive exams comes not from insufficient preparation but from entirely preventable logistical or psychological disruptions on the day itself, and a small amount of deliberate planning removes most of these risks.
