This second set continues the practice begun in the previous chapter with four more passages of varied register and difficulty — an economic explainer, a passage on public health policy, a piece of nature writing, and an excerpt on legal reasoning. As before, attempt your own précis before reading the model, and pay particular attention to the "what was cut" notes, since the reasoning behind each cut is the actual transferable skill, more so than any individual model précis itself.
Passage 1: The Paradox of Choice in Everyday Markets (388 words)
Walk into a large supermarket and stand in front of the shampoo aisle, and you will typically be confronted with somewhere between thirty and eighty distinct options, varying by brand, fragrance, hair type, and price. Classical economic theory predicts that this abundance of choice should make consumers better off: more options mean a higher chance that any given shopper finds something closely matched to their specific preferences, and competition among so many brands should, in theory, keep quality high and prices reasonable. For decades this prediction went largely unquestioned, treated as simply obvious — surely more choice can only help, never hurt, a rational consumer deciding how to spend their money.
A body of research beginning in the early 2000s complicated this picture considerably. In a now well-known study, researchers set up a tasting table in a grocery store offering samples of jam, alternating between a large display of twenty-four varieties and a smaller display of just six. The jam study, however, could not be cut the way the shampoo example was, even though both are technically "examples" — the jam study is not illustrative decoration but the actual evidence the passage's central claim rests on, so a précis of this passage without it would be a précis of an unsupported assertion, not of the argument the source actually makes. This is an important distinction for candidates to internalise: not every example is safe to cut; an example that functions as the argument's evidence, rather than as a vivid illustration of a point already established some other way, usually needs to survive compression in some compressed form. The specific ratio ("ten times more likely") was kept for the same reason the herd-immunity statistic survived in the previous chapter — it is the evidence itself, not decoration around the evidence.

This is the same distinction introduced in the previous passage's note, applied a second time: track what job an example is doing in a given part of the passage, since the same example can be safely cut in one place and necessary to keep in another, depending on whether it is illustrating something already stated or actually proving it.

The banyan tree at the bend of the river has stood, by the estimate of the forestry department that surveyed it a decade ago, for something close to two hundred years, its aerial roots having long since descended and thickened into what look, from a distance, like a small forest of individual trunks rather than the single organism they actually are. Because of this, the précis compresses the descriptive detail more aggressively than an argumentative passage's evidence would be compressed: the specific image of bats leaving "in a long dark ribbon against the sky," watched by children "exactly as it must have been watched... two centuries ago," is vivid and worth admiring in the original, but it illustrates a general point (the tree hosts abundant wildlife) that can be stated once, with two or three named species, without needing the poetic elaboration. What had to survive, deliberately, was the closing uncertainty about the future, since a précis that described the tree fully but dropped the passage's actual forward-looking question would have captured the scene while losing the point of describing it.
Passage 4: The Limits of "The Letter of the Law" (365 words)
There is a persistent assumption, common among people who have not studied law closely, that a well-drafted statute should be capable of settling any dispute that falls within its subject matter simply by being read carefully enough — that ambiguity in legal outcomes reflects sloppy drafting or biased judges rather than something more fundamental about language itself. This assumption does not survive close contact with how courts actually work, and understanding why is essential to understanding what judges are actually doing when they decide a case.
Consider a straightforward-sounding rule: "no vehicles in the park." The rule seems clear until it is applied to cases its drafters never specifically considered. Does it apply to a bicycle. To a wheelchair. To an ambulance responding to a medical emergency inside the park. To a small motorised toy car a child is playing with. Each of these cases sits somewhere on the boundary of what "vehicle" ordinarily means, and no amount of careful reading of the original four words resolves the boundary cases, because the rule's drafters, quite reasonably, did not anticipate every object that might one day be wheeled through a park and wrote a general rule rather than an exhaustive list.

Economists studying informal urban economies have paid surprisingly little sustained attention to a sector that, in most Indian cities, feeds a substantial share of the working population daily: street food. A plate of chole bhature or a plate of idli-sambar sold from a handcart for a fraction of what an equivalent restaurant meal would cost is not simply a matter of lower overheads, though lower overheads are certainly part of the explanation — no rent for a dining room, no waiting staff, minimal licensing costs in practice even where formal licensing requirements exist on paper. Reviewing the Set: Handling Numbers and Named Concepts in a Précis
The four passages in this chapter deliberately included at least one case each where a specific number or a named technical concept had to survive compression rather than being trimmed away with the rest of a sentence's detail — the tenfold jam-purchase ratio, the specific mechanism by which free electricity removes a price signal, the term "open texture" in the passage on legal reasoning. The lesson worth extracting is that a précis writer needs a genuine judgment call here, not a blanket rule; the reflex to strip out every number and every piece of specialised vocabulary, on the theory that a précis should always prefer plain, general language, will occasionally strip out content that the passage's actual argument depends on. Ask, each time a passage offers a number or a named concept, whether the sentence containing it is functioning as illustration (safe to generalise or cut) or as the load-bearing evidence or terminology the rest of the passage's reasoning depends on (usually not safe to cut). This same question, applied consistently, is what separates a précis that merely sounds shorter from one that is genuinely, accurately compressed.
It is also worth noting how differently these four passages open, since précis writers under time pressure often default to a single formulaic opening sentence structure regardless of the source. A passage that opens with a striking factual claim, as the groundwater and jam-tasting passages do, is best précised by leading with a compressed version of that same claim, since it is already doing the work of orienting a reader efficiently. A passage that opens with a general assumption it intends to challenge, as the public health and standardised testing passages do, is best précised by naming the assumption briefly before pivoting to the challenge, since the challenge only makes sense once the reader knows what is being challenged. Varying your opening sentence to match the source's actual structure, rather than forcing every précis through the same template, is a small technique that consistently improves both accuracy and readability, and it is worth deliberately practising on unfamiliar passages until it stops requiring conscious thought.
