PRACTICE MCQ POINTERS (Topic Pointers Only)
Use these as self-test prompts before attempting mock questions on this topic:
- Match-the-following: Governor-General/Viceroy vs the Act/Reform associated (a favorite SSC/RRB format — practice matching all Acts listed in the tables above).
- Chronological ordering questions: "Arrange the following Viceroys in correct chronological order" — practice using the Master Table sequence, especially Ripon–Dufferin–Lansdowne–Elgin II–Curzon–Minto II–Hardinge II (a commonly scrambled sequence).
- "Who was Governor-General/Viceroy when [event] occurred" — practice cross-referencing the Wars table and Acts table above (e.g., 1857 Revolt → Canning; Jallianwala Bagh → Chelmsford; Quit India → Linlithgow).
- Odd-one-out questions based on title type (Governor-General of Bengal vs Governor-General of India vs Viceroy) — know exactly which title applies to which name and year range.
- Assertion-Reason or one-word-answer questions on "firsts and lasts" (first Viceroy, last Viceroy, only Indian Governor-General, only Viceroy assassinated in India, etc.) — review the "Famous Firsts" table.
- Questions distinguishing "founded during whose tenure" vs "founded by whom" — especially for INC (founded by A.O. Hume, during Dufferin's tenure) and Muslim League (founded by Muslim leaders at Dacca, during Minto II's tenure) — a classic distractor pair.
- Fill-in-the-blank on treaty names and years (Treaty of Salbai, Seringapatam, Bassein, Sugauli, Yandaboo, Lahore, Amritsar) matched to the relevant Governor-General.
- Questions on Doctrine of Lapse — list of states annexed and the years (Satara, Jaitpur, Sambalpur, Udaipur, Nagpur, Jhansi) — commonly asked as "which state was NOT annexed under Doctrine of Lapse" (Awadh is the standard distractor, since it was annexed on grounds of misgovernance, not Doctrine of Lapse).
- Reforms sequence questions — Indian Councils Act 1861 → 1892 → 1909 → Government of India Act 1919 → 1935 — know what changed at each stage (introduction of non-official members, indirect election, dyarchy, provincial autonomy).
- Questions on the shift of capital — remember it was announced at the Delhi Durbar of 1911 (Hardinge II) but the city was formally inaugurated only in 1931 (Irwin) — a two-part fact often split across two MCQs.
