The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 November 1949 and came into effect on 26 January 1950 (celebrated as Republic Day), making India a "Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic" (the words "Socialist" and "Secular" were added by the 42nd Amendment, 1976). Dr. B.R. Ambedkar chaired the Constitution's Drafting Committee, and is widely regarded as its chief architect. India's Constitution is the longest written constitution of any sovereign country in the world.

The President is the constitutional/ceremonial head of state and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces; the Prime Minister is the head of government. As of August 2026, the President of India is Droupadi Murmu, and the Prime Minister is Narendra Modi. Parliament consists of the President, the Lok Sabha (House of the People, directly elected) and the Rajya Sabha (Council of States, representing states/UTs).

The Supreme Court of India, headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), is the highest judicial authority and the final court of appeal. India has a single integrated judicial system, with High Courts at the state level below the Supreme Court.
3.4 Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles
Fundamental Rights (Part III of the Constitution) are justiciable rights guaranteed to citizens (e.g., Right to Equality, Right to Freedom, Right against Exploitation, Right to Freedom of Religion, Cultural and Educational Rights, Right to Constitutional Remedies). Directive Principles of State Policy (Part IV) are non-justiciable guidelines for governance, aimed at establishing social and economic democracy.
