Geography Questions with Answers

Geography questions in SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS and RRB NTPC/Group D papers combine Indian and world physical geography: rivers, mountains, lakes, soils, boundaries, latitude and longitude, and the location of places. Most are direct and based on a map picture in your head. Tip: study with a map, not only a list, because location questions are far easier when you know what lies next to what.

Key facts

  • The Tropic of Cancer passes through eight Indian states: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram
  • India's standard meridian is 82 degrees 30 minutes East, which passes near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh
  • Kangchenjunga (Sikkim) is the highest peak in India
  • The Ganga is the longest river flowing within India; the Godavari is the longest river of peninsular India
  • Anamudi in the Western Ghats (Kerala) is the highest peak of peninsular India

Shortcuts that save time

  • Make a mental map: states on the Tropic of Cancer run from Gujarat in the west to Mizoram in the east. Odisha, Maharashtra and the southern states fall outside, so you can eliminate them quickly.
  • For superlatives (largest, highest, longest), check the scope in the question: 'in India' and 'in the world' have different answers. Misreading it is a common reason for lost marks.
  • If you have no map picture for a place, skip the question. Guessing without a clue costs negative marks.
