FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a typing speed test?

A typing speed test measures how fast and accurately you type over a fixed time, reported as words per minute (WPM) and an accuracy percentage. SSC and RRB run a similar test, called a Typing Skill Test or Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), to qualify candidates for certain posts.

How is WPM (words per minute) calculated?

Every 5 characters typed counts as one "word". Gross WPM is your raw speed; net WPM subtracts a penalty for incorrect characters, and net WPM is the figure checked against each exam’s qualifying speed.

What are key depressions, and why does SSC use them?

Key depressions count every key you press, including spaces and punctuation, over the full test duration. SSC’s CHSL and CGL Tier-2 skill tests qualify candidates on key depressions rather than WPM, so this tool tracks both.

Which government exams require a typing or DEST test?

SSC CHSL and SSC CGL Tier-2 both include a Data Entry/Computer Skill Test, and RRB NTPC includes a Typing Skill Test for several posts. Each has its own duration, language and qualifying speed — see the exam presets above, or pick your exam for the exact rules.

Do I need to sign up to use this typing test?

No. Every exam preset and the free practice mode work without an account. Sign in only if you want your WPM history saved to your dashboard over time.
