How typing speed is scored
- Gross WPM
- All characters typed, divided by 5, per minute. Your raw speed.
- Net WPM
- Correct characters minus incorrect characters, divided by 5, per minute. The figure checked against a qualifying speed.
- Accuracy
- Correct characters as a percentage of everything you typed.
- Key depressions
- Every key pressed, including spaces and punctuation. A practice estimate of the count official software reports.
How to get faster for a government typing test
- Learn the home row (A S D F, J K L ;) and rest your fingers there. Touch typing with your eyes on the passage is faster than hunting for keys.
- Put accuracy before speed. Net WPM subtracts errors, so a slower clean run usually scores higher than a fast messy one.
- Read two or three words ahead of the cursor to keep a steady rhythm instead of typing word by word.
- Practise at the full exam length a few times a week. Concentration fades in the last minutes and only full runs train that.
- Sit with straight wrists and the screen at eye level, and take a short break between runs to avoid strain.

What is a typing speed test?
A typing speed test measures how fast and accurately you type over a fixed time, reported as words per minute (WPM) and an accuracy percentage. SSC and RRB run a similar test, called a Typing Skill Test or Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), to qualify candidates for certain posts.
How is WPM (words per minute) calculated?
Every 5 characters count as one word. Gross WPM is all characters typed divided by 5, per minute. Net WPM is correct characters minus incorrect characters, divided by 5, per minute, and net WPM is the figure compared with a qualifying speed. Accuracy is correct characters as a percentage of everything typed.
What are key depressions, and why do SSC exams use them?
Key depressions count the keys you press, including spaces and punctuation. Some exams state the bar as key depressions, and often as a rate per hour, while WPM is a speed. This tool counts the depressions in your actual run and shows them next to WPM. The figure is a close practice estimate, not the count official exam software would report.
Which government exams require a typing or DEST test?
SSC CHSL and SSC CGL Tier-2 both include a Data Entry or Computer Skill Test, and RRB NTPC includes a Typing Skill Test for several posts. Each has its own duration, language and qualifying speed. Pick your exam on this page for the rules used by the practice test.
Do I need to register to see my typing test result?
You can take the test without an account, but your result (net WPM, accuracy, errors and, for exam presets, whether you would have qualified) opens after you register free with Google or WhatsApp. Registering also saves every attempt to your typing history.
What is a good typing speed?
Most people type somewhere around 35 to 45 wpm. For government exams the bars on this site run from 25 to 35 wpm net, so 40 wpm at 95% accuracy or better leaves a comfortable margin.
