1. Core Concepts & Theoretical Blueprint

A Cause and Effect question presents two independent statements, each describing a real event or phenomenon, and asks you to determine the logical relationship between them: does one statement describe the cause of the other (the effect), are both independent effects of a common underlying cause, are they entirely independent events with no relationship, or is one simply providing additional/supplementary information about the other?

The underlying logical structure rests on temporal and causal necessity: a true cause must occur before its effect in time (never after), and there must be a plausible mechanism by which the cause could produce the effect. Correlation, coincidence, or simple topical similarity between two statements is not sufficient to establish a cause-effect relationship.

Five possible relationships are tested between any two given statements:

  • Statement I is the cause of Statement II: Event I directly and plausibly produces or triggers Event II.
  • Statement II is the cause of Statement I: Event II directly and plausibly produces or triggers Event I.
  • Both I and II are independent effects of a common cause: Neither statement causes the other, but both are plausible consequences of some third, unstated underlying factor.
  • Both I and II are independent events: No causal link exists between them at all; they merely happen to be reported together.
  • Statement I/II is a supplementary/elaborating detail, not a separate cause or effect: One statement simply provides more specific information about the same event described in the other, rather than describing a distinct causally-linked event.

The Universal Trap: (1) Students assume the statement listed first (Statement I) must be the cause simply because of its position in the list — the order in which statements are presented has NO bearing on which is cause and which is effect; always evaluate based on time sequence and mechanism, not presentation order. (2) Students treat any two topically related statements (e.g., both about the same industry, region, or time period) as automatically cause-and-effect, when they may be entirely coincidental or independent — always demand a specific, plausible causal mechanism, not just topical proximity. (3) Students fail to consider "common cause" as an option and force a direct cause-effect relationship between two statements that are actually both downstream results of a shared, unstated trigger — when two effects appear simultaneously with no clear causal direction between them, common cause should be seriously considered.
