Chapter 1: SSC Stenographer Exam Pattern
1.1 Computer-Based Test (CBT)
The CBT consists of three sections, totalling 200 marks over 2 hours:
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| General Awareness | 50 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| English Language & Comprehension | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 2 hours |
Questions are available in both English and Hindi (except the English Language section, naturally). Negative marking of 0.25 marks applies for each wrong answer. A sectional timer enforces time management, meaning candidates cannot carry over time saved from one section to another.
1.2 Skill Test (Stenography)
Candidates who qualify the CBT undergo a stenography Skill Test:
| Grade | Language | Dictation Speed | Transcription Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade D | English | 80 words per minute | 50 minutes |
| Grade D | Hindi | 80 words per minute | 65 minutes (90 minutes with scribe assistance) |
| Grade C | English | 100 words per minute | 40 minutes |
| Grade C | Hindi | 100 words per minute | 55 minutes (75 minutes with scribe support) |
Both grades require candidates to accurately transcribe dictated content within the specified timeframe, testing both stenography (shorthand) proficiency and transcription accuracy/speed.
