Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Examination

The Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Examination, also known as the Civil Services Examination (CSE) – Forest Service Examination, is a competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Forest Service. The examination is conducted in two stages: the Civil Services Examination (Preliminary) and the Civil Services Examination (Main) – Forest Service Examination.

Eligibility Criteria for the IFoS examination are:

  • Must be a citizen of India
  • Should have completed a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field from a recognized university
  • Should have attained the age limit as specified by the UPSC which is usually between 21 to 32 years (Varies based on the category)

The Civil Services Examination (Preliminary) is a multiple choice question (MCQ) based test that includes two papers: General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The General Studies paper includes questions on current events, Indian polity and governance, economic and social development, environmental ecology, biodiversity, climate change and general science. The CSAT paper includes questions on comprehension, interpersonal skills including communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision-making and problem-solving.

Candidates who qualify the Civil Services Examination (Preliminary) are eligible to appear for the Civil Services Examination (Main) – Forest Service Examination. This stage includes nine papers, out of which two papers are on the optional subject (forestry or agriculture) and the rest are on general studies. Candidates must pass all papers, including the optional papers, to be considered for the final selection.

The final selection is based on the marks obtained in the main examination and interview. The main examination carries 1750 marks and the interview carries 275 marks.
