Teaching Social Studies: Methodology · Chapter 8

Teacher Roles and Qualities

What to remember

  • The modern teacher is a facilitator and guide, not only a giver of information. The child is an active builder of knowledge.
  • A Social Studies teacher also carries a special duty: to build democratic values, fairness, respect for diversity and critical thinking, and to handle sensitive topics without bias.
  • Teaching is a profession with ethics and continuous growth. A good teacher reflects on practice, learns new skills, works with parents and community, and is a role model.

Changing view of the teacher

In the older view the teacher was the main source of knowledge, and the child was a passive listener. The National Curriculum Framework 2005 and later reform documents, together with the RTE Act 2009 and the National Education Policy 2020, move the teacher towards a role of facilitator: someone who creates situations, asks good questions, and helps children discover. The child-centred approach says that children learn by activity, talk, and experience, and that the classroom should be free from fear.

The Kothari Commission (1964-66) said that the destiny of India is being shaped in her classrooms, showing how important the teacher is. The Secondary Education Commission (Mudaliar Commission, 1952-53) had earlier stressed the teacher's place in secondary education. Teachers' Day is celebrated on 5 September in honour of Dr S. Radhakrishnan.

Roles of the teacher

RoleWhat the teacher does
PlannerPrepares year, unit and lesson plans, and TLM
Facilitator and guideOrganises activities, asks questions, gives help only when needed
Organiser and managerArranges seating, groups, time, discipline and resources
EvaluatorAssesses continuously, gives feedback, plans remedial work
Counsellor and friendListens to children, spots problems, refers to specialists
Role modelShows punctuality, honesty, fairness and respect through behaviour
Researcher and reflective practitionerStudies own practice, tries new ideas, does action research
Community linkWorks with parents, School Management Committee, local resource persons
Lifelong learnerUpdates knowledge through reading, training and sharing
Agent of social changeChallenges prejudice, promotes equality and inclusion

The role of a constructivist teacher is to give tasks that make children think, connect new ideas with earlier knowledge, and let them present their own views. The role of an inclusive teacher is to see every child as able to learn, to adapt methods, and to treat girls and boys, rich and poor, and children of every caste, religion and ability with equal respect.

Qualities of a good teacher

Academic and professional

  • Strong knowledge of the subject and of how children learn.
  • Skill in planning, method, questioning and use of TLM.
  • Clear and simple communication, with a pleasant voice and good board work.
  • Knowledge of assessment and of the school curriculum.

Personal

  • Patience, kindness and a sense of humour.
  • Honesty, fairness, punctuality and self-control.
  • Enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
  • Open mind and willingness to change.
  • Good health and neat appearance.

Social

  • Cooperation with colleagues, parents and community.
  • Sensitivity to gender, caste, religion, language and disability.
  • Democratic and secular outlook.

The Social Studies teacher in particular

Social Studies deals with society, history, politics, resources and values, so the teacher needs some extra qualities:

  • Wide awareness: reads newspapers and follows current events, and links them to lessons.
  • Map and source skills: uses maps, globes, graphs and sources with ease.
  • Narration skill: tells the story of the past and of places in a lively manner.
  • Objectivity: presents controversial issues from several sides, and does not impose personal political, religious or caste views.
  • Commitment to Constitutional values: justice, liberty, equality, fraternity, secularism and respect for diversity.
  • Concern for environment and local community: uses field trips, projects and resource persons.
  • Encourages questioning: asks "why" and "how", and allows children to disagree politely.
  • Gender and caste sensitivity: corrects stereotypes found in books and in daily talk.
  • Respect for national symbols and heritage, without narrow pride or hatred of others.

The teacher should avoid a lecture-only style, over-dependence on dates and names, and copying from the textbook on the board. The teacher should also avoid making fun of a child's language, accent, dress or background.

Leadership and classroom climate

Kurt Lewin described three leadership styles, often applied to classrooms.

StyleFeaturesEffect
AutocraticTeacher decides everything, strict controlOrder, but fear and little initiative
DemocraticTeacher shares decisions, guides, and listensBest for motivation, responsibility and learning
Laissez-faireTeacher gives almost no directionFreedom, but confusion and weak achievement

A positive classroom has clear rules made with students, praise for effort, fair treatment, and corrective measures that avoid physical punishment. Corporal punishment and mental harassment are prohibited under the RTE Act (Section 17).

Professional ethics and development

Professional ethics: teachers should be honest with students and parents, keep confidential information private, avoid favouritism, never use a child's weakness for fun, avoid private tuition pressure on own students, and respect colleagues. A code of professional ethics for school teachers has been framed at national level, and State rules on conduct also apply.

Reflective practice. Donald Schon spoke of the "reflective practitioner" who thinks about the work while doing it and after doing it. A teacher can keep a diary, take feedback from students, observe peers, and write short notes after each lesson.

Action research. It is a small, practical study done by the teacher to solve a classroom problem, for example "How can map-reading be improved in Class 7?" The steps are: identify the problem, plan an action, apply it, observe the results, reflect, and plan again. The term is linked with Kurt Lewin and, in education, with Stephen Corey.

Continuous professional development (CPD). The National Education Policy 2020 expects teachers to take a minimum number of hours of CPD each year (the policy mentions 50 hours; check the latest official orders). Opportunities include training at DIET, SCERT, workshops, teacher forums, the DIKSHA platform, NISHTHA training of NCERT, and cluster and mandal resource-centre meetings. Teacher education is regulated by NCTE, and a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is the basic eligibility condition for teaching in schools.

Teacher and the community

A teacher works with the School Management Committee, parents' meetings, and local leaders. Home visits, parent-teacher meetings, and sharing of children's progress build trust. For Social Studies, a teacher can invite local officials, artisans and elders to class and take children to community places.

Teacher-student relationship

A good relationship rests on trust, warmth and fairness. The teacher knows every child by name, notices quiet children, and gives every child chances to speak. Girls and boys get equal tasks in groups. Praise is given for effort and specific work, and mistakes are treated as a step in learning. The teacher listens first, then guides. A fearful classroom blocks learning, so the teacher uses encouragement, humour and clear rules. Home background is respected, and a child's language is used as a resource, especially in the early classes where the mother tongue helps understanding.

A teacher also manages the class: a seating plan that allows group work, a routine for starting and ending the period, and quick, calm handling of disruption. Good management comes from planning and from interesting tasks, not from threats.

Exam traps

  • Facilitator does not mean passive; the teacher still plans, guides and assesses.
  • Democratic style is better than autocratic or laissez-faire for learning.
  • Reflective practitioner is linked with Donald Schon; leadership styles with Kurt Lewin.
  • Teachers' Day is on 5 September, the birthday of Dr S. Radhakrishnan.
  • The Kothari Commission is known for the statement about destiny and classrooms.
  • Objectivity does not mean silence on controversial issues; it means presenting all sides fairly.
  • Action research is done by the teacher on a classroom problem, not by a university expert for publication.
  • Corporal punishment is not allowed even for discipline.
