Railways
- Indian Railways: one of the largest railway networks in the world, under the Ministry of Railways; managed via Railway Board.
- First train in India: ran between Bombay (Bori Bunder) and Thane, 16 April 1853.
- Indian Railways divided into Zones: 18 zones (e.g., Northern Railway - HQ Delhi, Southern Railway - HQ Chennai, Western Railway - HQ Mumbai, Eastern Railway - HQ Kolkata) each headed by a General Manager.
- Metro Rail: Kolkata Metro was India's first metro (1984); Delhi Metro is the largest network.
- Vande Bharat Express: India's first semi-high-speed indigenous train (introduced 2019), engineered by ICF Chennai.
- Konkan Railway: connects Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka along the western coast, known for engineering feats.
- Mountain Railways of India (UNESCO sites): Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway.
- Bullet Train Project: Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, Indo-Japanese collaboration.
- Dedicated Freight Corridors: Eastern and Western DFCs for freight-only movement.

Roadways
- India has one of the largest road networks in the world.
- Classified into: National Highways (NH — maintained by NHAI, National Highways Authority of India), State Highways, District Roads, Rural/Village Roads.
- Golden Quadrilateral: connects Delhi-Mumbai-Chennai-Kolkata, largest highway project in India, launched under PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- NH 44: longest national highway in India (Srinagar to Kanniyakumari).
- Bharatmala Pariyojana: umbrella program for highway development (2017).
- Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY): 2000, rural road connectivity.
Waterways
- National Waterways: inland water transport routes; NW-1 (Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system) is a major one.
- Major Ports: 12 major ports including Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva — largest container port), Chennai, Kolkata (only major riverine port), Vishakhapatnam, Kandla (Deendayal Port), Kochi, Paradip, Tuticorin.
- Sagarmala Programme: 2015, port-led development and modernisation.
- Shipping Corporation of India: major shipping PSU.
Airways
- Air India: India's flag carrier (originally founded by J.R.D. Tata as Tata Airlines, 1932); privatised again in 2022 (acquired by Tata Group, returning to Tata ownership).
- Airports Authority of India (AAI): manages civil aviation infrastructure.
- Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi): busiest airport in India.
- UDAN Scheme (2016): regional connectivity scheme, "Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik," aims to make air travel affordable.
- DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation): regulatory body for civil aviation.
Urban/Public Transport
- Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC): operational since 2002.
- BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System): implemented in several Indian cities (Ahmedabad's is notable).
