Optics — the branch of physics dealing with the behaviour and properties of light — is one of the oldest and most consistently examined areas of general science in SSC and Railway recruitment examinations. Questions from this chapter typically fall into a few recurring types: definitional questions (laws of reflection/refraction, SI units), applied/conceptual questions (why the sky is blue, why a straw looks bent in water, why diamonds sparkle), diagram-based reasoning questions (nature of image formed by a given mirror or lens for a given object position), and occasional direct numericals using the mirror or lens formula. These notes are organised to build the concepts from first principles — so that even an unfamiliar question can be reasoned out — while also providing dense reference tables and a rapid-revision fact list for last-minute recall.
