Why This Chapter Matters

IBPS and SBI Clerk General Awareness papers pull 3 to 5 questions from environment and ecology almost every single attempt, and these are among the easiest marks on the whole paper if you know the core facts cold. Unlike banking terms or committee names that keep changing, an ecosystem is an ecosystem — the biology doesn't get reshuffled every quarter, so what you learn here stays valid attempt after attempt. That makes this chapter one of the best return-on-effort topics in the entire syllabus.

The single biggest mistake aspirants make is treating "environment" as one giant, vague blob of facts to cram the night before the exam. They mix up climate change causes with pollution types, confuse conservation programmes with government schemes that sound similar, and lose easy marks to careless reading rather than lack of knowledge. This chapter breaks the subject into clean, separate boxes — ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, pollution, and conservation — so each fact has a fixed address in your memory. Read it once properly and you will answer these questions faster than almost anyone else in the exam hall, because most candidates skip this section as "not important" and pay for it later.

1. What an Ecosystem Actually Is

An ecosystem is simply a community of living organisms interacting with each other and with their non-living surroundings — sunlight, soil, water, air — as one functional unit. Think of a school canteen. Students (organisms) depend on the cook, the supply of ingredients, the electricity, and the seating space (non-living environment). Remove the electricity and the whole canteen stops functioning, even though the students themselves are fine. That is exactly how an ecosystem works: every part depends on every other part, and damage to one non-living factor can collapse the whole living community.

Ecosystems have two broad components. Biotic components are all living things — producers, consumers, and decomposers. Abiotic components are the non-living factors — temperature, sunlight, rainfall, soil pH, and minerals.

Producers are green plants and algae that make their own food through photosynthesis, using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose and oxygen. They sit at the base of every food chain because nothing else in the ecosystem can create food from raw sunlight.

Consumers eat other organisms for energy. Primary consumers (herbivores like deer or grasshoppers) eat producers directly. Secondary consumers (carnivores or omnivores like frogs or foxes) eat primary consumers. Tertiary consumers sit at the top and eat secondary consumers — think of a hawk eating a snake that ate a frog that ate an insect.

Decomposers — bacteria and fungi — break down dead organisms and waste into simple nutrients, returning them to the soil. Without decomposers, dead bodies and fallen leaves would pile up forever and nutrients would never recycle back to producers. A decomposer is like the sweeper who clears the canteen after lunch — invisible to most people, but the whole cycle would stop without that job getting done.

A food chain is a single straight-line sequence: grass → grasshopper → frog → snake → eagle. A food web is the real-world picture — many overlapping food chains, because most animals eat more than one type of food and get eaten by more than one predator.

Exam trap: Students often confuse a food chain with a food web. A food chain is linear and simple; a food web is the interconnected network of many food chains in one habitat. If a question mentions "interconnected" or "network," the answer is food web, not food chain.

The energy pyramid shows how energy decreases as you move up trophic levels. Only about 10% of energy transfers from one level to the next — the rest is lost as heat during life processes like respiration and movement. This is called the ten percent law, given by Raymond Lindeman. It explains why there are always far more grass plants than lions in any ecosystem — energy loss at every step limits how many top predators an ecosystem can support.

Types of Ecosystems

Ecosystems are broadly classified as terrestrial (land-based, like forests, grasslands, and deserts) and aquatic (water-based, split further into freshwater like rivers and lakes, and marine like oceans and seas). India is unusually lucky here — within one country you find tropical rainforests in the Northeast, deserts in Rajasthan, alpine meadows in the Himalayas, mangroves along the coast, and coral reefs near the Andaman islands. Few countries pack this much ecological variety into one landmass.

2. Biodiversity — India's Natural Wealth

Biodiversity means the variety of life forms — plants, animals, and microorganisms — found in a particular region or on Earth as a whole. It works at three levels: genetic diversity (variation within a species, like different rice varieties grown across India), species diversity (variety of species within an ecosystem), and ecosystem diversity (variety of habitats within a region).

India is one of only 17 countries in the world officially recognised as megadiverse, together holding roughly 60-70% of the planet's biodiversity despite covering just about 2.4% of the world's land area. That single statistic is a favourite for exam-setters, so lock it in: India — megadiverse, roughly 7-8% of all recorded species on Earth, spread across four global biodiversity hotspots.

India's four biodiversity hotspots are the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the Indo-Burma region (Northeast India), and Sundaland (which includes the Nicobar Islands). A biodiversity hotspot, as defined by British ecologist Norman Myers, is a region with a very high number of endemic species (species found nowhere else) that is also under serious threat from habitat loss. To qualify globally, a region must have at least 1,500 endemic vascular plant species and have lost at least 70% of its original habitat.

Endemic species exist naturally in only one geographic location and nowhere else on Earth. The Nilgiri Tahr, a wild goat, is endemic to the Western Ghats. The lion-tailed macaque is another Western Ghats endemic. Endemism is different from being merely rare — a species can be common within its home range but still endemic, simply because it doesn't naturally occur anywhere else.

The IUCN Red List

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the Red List, the world's most comprehensive inventory of the conservation status of species. Categories run, in order of increasing risk, through Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, and Extinct. Species like the Great Indian Bustard, the Gharial, and several vulture species found in India sit in the Critically Endangered bracket.

Exam trap: "Vulnerable," "Endangered," and "Critically Endangered" are three separate IUCN categories in ascending order of extinction risk, not interchangeable synonyms. Questions often test whether you know the exact ranking order.

3. Climate Change — Causes and Effects

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns, largely driven since the industrial era by human activity, especially the burning of fossil fuels. The core mechanism is the greenhouse effect: certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun the way a glass greenhouse traps warmth for growing plants in winter — the glass lets sunlight in but stops the heat from escaping easily. A natural greenhouse effect is essential for life; Earth without one would be a frozen rock. The problem is human activity has thickened that "glass" far beyond its natural level, trapping excess heat.

The major greenhouse gases (GHGs) are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gases (like CFCs and HFCs). CO2 is released mainly by burning coal, oil, and natural gas, and by deforestation, since fewer trees mean less carbon absorbed. Methane comes heavily from livestock digestion, paddy fields, and landfills. Nitrous oxide comes largely from fertiliser use in agriculture.

Global warming is the specific rise in Earth's average surface temperature, and it is the primary driver of the broader phenomenon of climate change. Use them carefully: global warming is about rising temperature; climate change is the wider basket of consequences — shifting rainfall, melting glaciers, and more frequent extreme weather.

Effects of climate change tested repeatedly in exams include rising sea levels from melting polar ice and glaciers, more frequent and intense heatwaves and cyclones, disrupted monsoon patterns affecting Indian agriculture, ocean acidification, and threats to low-lying coastal cities and island nations.

Key International Climate Agreements

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), adopted in 1992, is the parent treaty under which almost all major climate negotiations happen. Its annual meeting is called the Conference of Parties (COP).

The Kyoto Protocol (1997, under UNFCCC) was the first binding international agreement requiring developed countries to cut GHG emissions, based on the principle that industrialised nations bore historical responsibility for most past emissions.

The Paris Agreement, adopted at COP21 in 2015 and effective from 2016, is the current global climate framework. Its central goal is to keep global temperature rise this century well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit the rise to 1.5°C. Unlike Kyoto, the Paris Agreement applies to all countries, not just developed ones, through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) — voluntary national pledges that each country sets for itself and updates periodically.

Exam trap: Kyoto Protocol bound only developed nations to cuts; the Paris Agreement asks all nations, developed and developing, to contribute through self-determined NDCs. Questions frequently swap these two features between the wrong treaty.

India's climate commitments include a pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2070, announced at COP26 in Glasgow (2021), along with targets to source about 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources and reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP.

4. Pollution — Types and Sources

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or energy into the environment, causing damage to ecosystems, human health, or property. Banking exams like to test the type-source-effect combination, so learn each type as a complete package rather than isolated facts.

Air pollution comes from vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, crop residue burning, and construction dust. Major pollutants include particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. PM2.5 refers to particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres in diameter — small enough to penetrate deep into lungs and even enter the bloodstream, which is why it is considered far more dangerous than the coarser PM10.

Water pollution results from untreated sewage, industrial effluents, agricultural runoff carrying pesticides and fertilisers, and plastic waste entering rivers and oceans. The Ganga Action Plan, launched in 1985, was India's first major river-cleaning programme, later expanded and replaced in scope by the Namami Gange Programme launched in 2014-15 for integrated conservation of the Ganga.

Soil pollution happens through excessive chemical fertiliser and pesticide use, industrial waste dumping, and improper disposal of solid waste, degrading land fertility over time.

Noise pollution comes from traffic, construction, and industrial machinery, and is measured in decibels (dB). Prolonged exposure above safe limits damages hearing and raises stress-related health risks.

Exam trap: Do not confuse the unit of noise (decibel, dB) with the unit used for radiation (sievert) or air quality (the Air Quality Index, AQI, which is a composite score, not a raw pollutant measurement). Each pollution type has its own specific measurement tool — questions test this pairing often.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in India is monitored by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and ranges in six categories from Good (0-50) to Severe (401-500). Delhi's winter smog crisis, driven by a mix of vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and stubble burning in neighbouring states, is a recurring real-world example examiners like to reference.

Plastic pollution deserves special mention because of India's active policy response. India banned identified single-use plastic items from July 2022 under the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, targeting items like plastic cutlery, straws, and thin carry bags below a specified thickness.

5. Conservation Efforts in India

India runs one of the world's largest networks of protected conservation programmes, and the exam tests both the programme names and the specific species or habitat each one protects.

Project Tiger, launched in 1973, is India's flagship wildlife conservation programme, aimed at protecting the Bengal tiger population through a network of dedicated tiger reserves. It began with 9 reserves and has grown to over 50 tiger reserves across India today. India now holds roughly 70-75% of the world's wild tiger population, making this one of the most successful large-carnivore conservation stories globally.

Project Elephant, launched in 1992, focuses on protecting elephants, their habitat, and migration corridors, and on managing human-elephant conflict in states like Assam, Kerala, Karnataka, and Odisha.

Project Hangul protects the Kashmir stag (Hangul), found only in Jammu and Kashmir's Dachigam National Park, one of India's most localised conservation efforts.

India classifies protected zones into four legal categories under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: National Parks (highest protection, no human activity like grazing or private land rights allowed), Wildlife Sanctuaries (protection with some regulated human activity permitted), Biosphere Reserves (larger zones balancing conservation with sustainable use by local communities, often containing national parks and sanctuaries within them), and Conservation Reserves/Community Reserves (smaller buffer zones, often on government or community land adjoining existing protected areas).

Exam trap: A National Park has stricter restrictions than a Wildlife Sanctuary — no private rights or grazing are typically allowed inside a National Park, while a Sanctuary can permit limited regulated activity. Questions frequently ask which of the two is "more restrictive."

India currently has over a hundred national parks and several hundred wildlife sanctuaries. Ramsar Sites are wetlands of international importance recognised under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty signed in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971. India has steadily added to its Ramsar list over the years, and it now counts among the countries with the largest number of Ramsar sites in Asia. Notable Indian Ramsar sites include Chilika Lake in Odisha (Asia's largest brackish water lagoon) and Keoladeo National Park in Rajasthan, a major bird sanctuary.

Key Government Environmental Initiatives

National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), launched in 2008, outlines India's strategy through eight national missions covering solar energy, energy efficiency, sustainable habitat, water, Himalayan ecosystem, green India (afforestation), sustainable agriculture, and strategic knowledge for climate change.

National Solar Mission, one of the NAPCC's eight missions, aims to massively scale up solar power generation capacity in India, positioning the country as a global leader in solar energy deployment.

International Solar Alliance (ISA), launched jointly by India and France at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, is a coalition of solar-resource-rich countries working together to expand solar energy use worldwide. Its headquarters is in Gurugram, India — a genuine point of pride, since it is one of the few international organisations headquartered on Indian soil with India as a founding leader rather than just a member.

Swachh Bharat Mission, launched on 2 October 2014, targets sanitation and cleanliness, including solid waste management, and contributed to India being declared open-defecation-free in rural areas by October 2019.

National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), launched in 2019, is India's first national framework specifically targeting a time-bound reduction in air pollution levels across identified non-attainment cities.
