Profit and Loss is one of the highest-yield topics in the Quantitative Aptitude section of every SSC and Railway exam. In SSC CGL Tier-I and Tier-II, CHSL, and MTS, you can expect anywhere from 2 to 5 direct questions on Profit and Loss every single year, and this count rises further if you include the profit-loss ideas hidden inside Data Interpretation sets, mixture-and-alligation questions, and partnership problems. In RRB NTPC and Group D, the pattern is nearly identical — 2 to 4 questions per shift, usually of easy-to-moderate difficulty, with false weight (dishonest dealer) questions and successive discount questions being clear favourites of paper-setters.
The good news is that Profit and Loss is built almost entirely on the Percentage chapter you have already studied. Every profit or loss is, at its core, a percentage change of Cost Price. If your percentage fundamentals — especially fraction-to-percentage conversion and the multiplying-factor method — are strong, this chapter will feel like an extension rather than a new subject. The difficulty level in actual papers ranges from purely formula-based (Tier-I, CHSL, MTS, Group D) to multi-step chained problems combining discount, markup, and false weight together (Tier-II, NTPC higher-difficulty shifts). Very rarely does SSC/RRB ask anything that needs more than two or three logical steps — the challenge is speed and avoiding traps, not complexity.
Typical weightage across exams (approximate, based on recent years’ patterns):
| Exam | Direct P&L questions per paper | Typical difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL Tier-I | 2–3 | Easy to Moderate |
| SSC CGL Tier-II | 2–4 | Moderate to Hard (combined-concept) |
| SSC CHSL | 2–3 | Easy to Moderate |
| SSC MTS | 1–2 | Easy |
| RRB NTPC (CBT-1/CBT-2) | 2–3 | Easy to Moderate |
| RRB Group D | 1–2 | Easy |
This chapter builds the theory from the ground up — Cost Price, Selling Price, Marked Price and Discount — then moves into the classic SSC/RRB question types: successive discounts, dishonest dealers using false weights, the “sold at same price, one profit% one loss%” trap, and averaging profit across a mixed lot. A dedicated shortcuts section follows, built specifically for 30–45 second solving, and the chapter closes with 30 fully solved practice questions split into a Basic set and an Exam-level set, so you can test yourself under realistic conditions before checking the answer key.
A word on strategy before we begin: in the exam hall, Profit and Loss questions reward those who set up the correct multiplying factor in the first ten seconds far more than those who write out full algebraic equations. Every worked example in this chapter is therefore solved using the fastest legitimate method first, with a slower “textbook” verification shown alongside wherever the result is non-obvious. Once you have worked through Sections 2 and 3 once with a pen in hand, you should be able to solve most Set A questions in under 30 seconds each and most Set B questions in 45–75 seconds each — well within the per-question budget SSC and RRB papers allow.
