- Chapekar Brothers (Damodar and Balkrishna Chapekar): Assassinated British Plague Commissioner W.C. Rand in Poona (1897), in protest against the harsh and often abusive plague-control measures imposed on the local population; among the earliest political assassinations of the nationalist era; both brothers were later executed.
- Vasudev Balwant Phadke: Often regarded as the "Father of the Armed Revolutionary Movement in India"; organised an armed uprising in Maharashtra in 1879 against British economic policies and famine mismanagement, predating the formal Congress-era revolutionary movements; captured and exiled, he died in prison (Aden) in 1883.
