Why This Chapter Matters
If physical geography gives you the rules of the game, Indian geography is where RRB NTPC actually plays it. This is consistently one of the highest-yield chapters in the exam, often worth 8 to 10 marks on its own, because the Railways sit inside India, run through nearly every state, and cross nearly every river you are about to study. Questions on state capitals, river-linked cities, and mineral belts come back exam after exam, and they are learnable in a way that current affairs never quite is.
The single biggest mistake aspirants make here is learning states and rivers as two separate lists instead of one connected map. A river doesn't just "exist," it passes through specific states, feeds specific dams, and decides where specific crops grow. Once you link a river to the states it flows through, and those states to their capitals and major crops, you are no longer memorising four different lists, you are memorising one map with four layers. That is what this chapter is built to do.
Physical Divisions of India
India's landmass is usually split into six broad physical divisions, and this framework alone answers a huge chunk of geography questions.
1. The Himalayan Mountains: the young, still-rising fold mountain system along India's northern border, running from Jammu & Kashmir in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east. Geographers further divide it into the Greater Himalayas (Himadri, the highest range, home to peaks like Kanchenjunga, India's tallest peak at 8,586 metres), the Lesser Himalayas (Himachal, home to hill stations like Shimla and Darjeeling), and the Outer Himalayas (Shiwaliks, the lowest and southernmost range).
2. The Northern Plains: built by three great river systems, the Indus, the Ganga, and the Brahmaputra, this is the most fertile and densely populated part of India, often called the food bowl of the country. Flat, alluvial, and stretching from Punjab in the west to Assam in the east.
3. The Peninsular Plateau: an ancient, stable block of rock forming the southern triangle of India, made up of the Deccan Plateau in the centre-south and smaller plateaus like Malwa and Chotanagpur. Because this is old, hard rock rather than young alluvial soil, it is India's richest mineral belt, holding most of the country's iron ore, coal, and manganese.
4. The Indian Desert (Thar): located mainly in western Rajasthan, a dry, sandy region with low and erratic rainfall.
5. The Coastal Plains: split into the Western Coastal Plain (narrow, between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, includes the Konkan and Malabar coasts) and the Eastern Coastal Plain (wider, between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, includes the Coromandel and Northern Circars). Exam trap: students frequently swap which coast is wider. The eastern coast is wider because major rivers like the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri build broad deltas as they enter the Bay of Bengal, while the western coast is narrow and rivers there tend to form estuaries instead of deltas, since the land drops more steeply into the Arabian Sea.
6. The Islands: the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal (of volcanic and tectonic origin, closer to Myanmar than to mainland India) and the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea (coral origin, India's smallest union territory by area).
Think of India's shape like a diamond sitting on a table: the Himalayas form the hard, jagged crown at the top, the Northern Plains are the flat facet just below it, and the Peninsular Plateau is the broad triangular base tapering into the sea, exactly the shape you see on any map of India.
Major River Systems and Basins
India's rivers split into two broad families based on where they originate, and this single distinction unlocks most river-related questions.
Himalayan rivers are perennial, meaning they flow year-round, because they are fed both by monsoon rain and by melting snow and glaciers in the Himalayas. The three major systems are:
- The Indus system: originates near Lake Mansarovar in Tibet, flows through Ladakh and Pakistan. Its major tributaries in India include the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej, together called the "Five Rivers" that gave Punjab its name (panj = five, ab = water). Most of the Indus basin today lies in Pakistan, though its headwaters and tributaries are shared with India.
- The Ganga system: India's most important river, originating from the Gangotri glacier (the actual source stream is called Bhagirathi) in Uttarakhand. It is joined by major tributaries including the Yamuna (itself originating from the Yamunotri glacier), Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi, and Son, before flowing through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, and finally splitting into a vast delta with the Brahmaputra before entering the Bay of Bengal. The Ganga-Brahmaputra delta, shared with Bangladesh, is the largest delta in the world.
- The Brahmaputra system: rises in Tibet, where it is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo, enters India through Arunachal Pradesh, flows through Assam, and joins the Ganga in Bangladesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal. Exam trap: many students assume the Brahmaputra is a purely Indian river; a large part of its course lies in Tibet before it ever enters India, and it continues into Bangladesh after leaving India, so it is genuinely a shared, international river system on both ends.
Peninsular rivers are mostly seasonal, depending almost entirely on monsoon rainfall since the Peninsular Plateau has no snow-fed source. Major ones:
- The Narmada and the Tapi are unusual because they flow westward into the Arabian Sea through rift valleys, unlike almost every other peninsular river, which flows eastward. This westward flow is the single most tested fact about these two rivers.
- The Godavari, called the "Ganga of the South" for its length and the region it nourishes, originates in Maharashtra and flows across Telangana into the Bay of Bengal, forming a large delta with Andhra Pradesh.
- The Krishna originates near Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra and flows through Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh into the Bay of Bengal.
- The Kaveri (Cauvery) originates in Karnataka (Talakaveri, in the Western Ghats) and flows through Tamil Nadu, famous for the Shivanasamudra Falls and long-running water-sharing disputes between the two states, a genuine current-affairs-linked fact worth remembering.
Memory hook: for the two westward-flowing rivers, remember "Narmada and Tapi Take the Turn," picturing them as the two rebels of the Peninsular Plateau who refuse to follow the crowd east toward the Bay of Bengal.
River basins matter for exams because major dams sit on them: the Bhakra Nangal Dam on the Sutlej, the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi (Odisha, one of the longest dams in the world), and the Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi, India's tallest dam.
The Monsoon System
The word "monsoon" comes from the Arabic "mausim," meaning season, and it refers to a seasonal reversal of wind direction, not simply "the rainy season" as many students loosely assume. India experiences two monsoon phases in a year.
The Southwest Monsoon (roughly June to September) is the main rainy season, bringing about 75-80% of India's annual rainfall. It happens because land heats up much faster than the ocean during summer, creating a strong low-pressure zone over northwest India, while the ocean stays relatively cooler with higher pressure. Moist air rushes from the high-pressure ocean toward the low-pressure land, exactly like air rushing out of a punctured balloon toward lower pressure, and this moist air carries enormous rainfall once it hits India. The monsoon arrives first at the Kerala coast (conventionally around June 1) and then advances northward across the country, splitting into the Arabian Sea branch (bringing rain to the west coast and hitting the Western Ghats hard, causing very heavy rainfall on the windward side) and the Bay of Bengal branch (curving up through the northeast and then sweeping west across the Gangetic plains).
Exam trap: Mawsynram and Cherrapunji, both in Meghalaya, are famous as among the wettest places on earth, and this happens because the Bay of Bengal branch hits the funnel-shaped hills there directly, forcing air upward and squeezing out rain almost the way you'd squeeze a wet sponge against a wall.
The Northeast Monsoon (roughly October to December) reverses the wind direction as winter sets in, with cooler, drier winds blowing from land to sea. It brings comparatively little rain overall, except along the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, which actually receives most of its annual rainfall during this period, because these winds pick up moisture crossing the Bay of Bengal before hitting the Tamil Nadu coast.
The monsoon is not perfectly reliable. Two current-affairs-linked factors influence it strongly: El Niño years (discussed in the previous chapter) tend to weaken the monsoon, while La Niña years tend to strengthen it. India's agriculture, and by extension a huge share of its economy, still depends heavily on a healthy monsoon, which is why monsoon forecasts make national news every year.
States and Union Territories with Capitals
India currently has 28 states and 8 union territories. This is a frequently tested, purely factual area, so precision matters more than analysis here.
Exam trap: three states have capitals that are easy to mix up with a neighbouring state's biggest city. Maharashtra's capital is Mumbai (correct, and also its biggest city), but students sometimes confuse Karnataka's capital Bengaluru with a name change trap; Karnataka's official capital name is Bengaluru, not the older "Bangalore" spelling used colloquially, though both refer to the same city, so exams may use either. Also remember Andhra Pradesh's capital situation has been in flux, with Amaravati being developed as the capital while Visakhapatnam and other cities have been discussed for administrative roles; stick with Amaravati as the answer unless the exam clearly signals a more recent change.
A few states with two capitals or special notes worth remembering: Himachal Pradesh has Shimla as its capital, with Dharamshala serving as a winter capital. Jammu & Kashmir (a union territory since 2019) has historically operated with Srinagar as summer capital and Jammu as winter capital.
Key union territories and their headquarters: Delhi (National Capital Territory), Chandigarh (shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, itself a separate union territory), Puducherry, Ladakh (capital Leh), Jammu & Kashmir, Andaman & Nicobar Islands (capital Port Blair), Lakshadweep (capital Kavaratti), and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (a merged union territory since 2020, headquartered at Daman).
Memory hook: for the coastal southern states going down the eastern coast, remember "Wonderfully Old Anna Travels" for West Bengal (Kolkata), Odisha (Bhubaneswar), Andhra Pradesh (Amaravati), Tamil Nadu (Chennai), moving roughly north to south.
Mineral and Energy Resources
India's mineral wealth is concentrated overwhelmingly in the Peninsular Plateau, especially the Chotanagpur Plateau region spanning Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal, often called India's mineral heartland, because that ancient, hard rock base is exactly where valuable ores form over geological time.
Iron ore: Odisha and Chhattisgarh together hold the largest reserves, with Karnataka and Jharkhand also major producers. Coal: India has massive reserves, mostly in Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal, and coal remains the backbone of India's electricity generation even as renewable energy expands. Bauxite (aluminium ore): Odisha leads production, followed by Gujarat and Jharkhand. Manganese: used mainly in steel-making, with Odisha, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh as leading producers. Copper: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand hold the major reserves. Mica: Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh are historically significant producers.
Petroleum and natural gas: India's major onshore fields sit in Assam (the oldest oil-producing region in India, going back to the 19th century) and Gujarat, while offshore fields, most notably Bombay High in the Arabian Sea, contribute a large share of domestic crude output. Exam trap: students sometimes assume India is self-sufficient in petroleum; in reality India imports a large majority of its crude oil needs, since domestic production covers only a modest share of national demand.
For energy generation, India relies on a mix: thermal power (mostly coal-based) still supplies the largest share of electricity, hydroelectric power benefits from India's mountainous river systems (major projects include Bhakra Nangal, Tehri, and various Himalayan river projects), nuclear power contributes a smaller but growing share (major plants include Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu and Tarapur in Maharashtra, India's first nuclear plant), and renewable energy, especially solar and wind, has expanded rapidly in the last decade, with Rajasthan and Gujarat leading in solar capacity due to their high sunlight exposure and available land, and Tamil Nadu and Gujarat leading in wind capacity.
Agriculture Zones and Major Crops
India's agriculture divides broadly along the rainfall and soil map you have already built in your head from the river and physical-division sections.
Rice needs high temperature and heavy rainfall (or irrigation), so it dominates the eastern and southern states with high monsoon rainfall: West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab (thanks to irrigation despite lower natural rainfall), and the southern coastal states. Wheat needs a cooler growing season and moderate, well-distributed rainfall or irrigation, making Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh the leading producers; Punjab and Haryana together are often called the "wheat bowl" of India, largely because of extensive canal and tube-well irrigation built up since the Green Revolution of the 1960s.
Cotton grows best in the black soil (regur soil) regions of the Deccan Plateau, since this soil retains moisture exceptionally well, which is why Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of Madhya Pradesh lead cotton production. Sugarcane needs high temperature, high humidity, and rich soil, making Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra the top producers. Tea needs a cool, moist climate on well-drained hilly slopes, which is exactly why Assam (the single largest tea-producing state in India) and the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal dominate, alongside the Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu for a smaller southern production zone. Coffee shares similar hill conditions but favours a slightly different climate band, grown mainly in Karnataka (the largest producer), Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
Exam trap: tea and coffee are frequently swapped in exam options because both grow on hills, but tea dominates the northeast and Bengal hills while coffee dominates the southern hills of Karnataka and Kerala; if the question mentions Assam specifically, the answer is almost always tea, never coffee.
Jute, called the "golden fibre," needs high humidity and fertile alluvial soil, so West Bengal is by far the leading producer, benefiting from the Ganga delta's soil and climate. Pulses and oilseeds are grown more widely across drier regions like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, since these crops need comparatively less water than rice or sugarcane.
The Green Revolution, launched in the 1960s, dramatically increased wheat and rice yields through high-yielding seed varieties, irrigation expansion, and fertiliser use, concentrated heavily in Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, which is exactly why this belt still leads India's foodgrain production today.
Forest Types and Biodiversity
India's forests, shaped by the same rainfall and temperature patterns you have already studied, fall into a few broad types.
Tropical evergreen forests need very high rainfall (over 200 cm annually) and grow densely with tall, broad-leaved trees that stay green year-round, found in the Western Ghats, the northeastern states, and the Andaman Islands. Tropical deciduous forests, India's most widespread forest type, shed their leaves for part of the year during the dry season to conserve water, and are further split into moist deciduous (found in areas with 100-200 cm rainfall, like parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and the eastern Himalayan foothills) and dry deciduous (found in areas with 70-100 cm rainfall, like large parts of the Deccan Plateau); teak and sal are the signature trees of this type. Thorn and scrub forests grow in the driest regions like western Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat and Punjab, adapted with thorny, drought-resistant plants. Mountain (montane) forests change with altitude in the Himalayas, from broad-leaved forests lower down to coniferous forests higher up and finally alpine grasslands near the snowline. Mangrove forests grow along tidal coastlines and river deltas with brackish water, and the Sundarbans, spanning West Bengal and Bangladesh across the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta, is the largest mangrove forest in the world and home to the Bengal tiger.
Biodiversity hotspots recognised in India include the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas, the region around Indo-Burma, and the Sundaland (which includes the Nicobar Islands), all marked by extremely high species diversity combined with significant habitat loss, the exact combination that defines a biodiversity hotspot globally.
