Why This Chapter Matters
Environment and ecology questions show up regularly in SSC MTS and CHSL papers, usually 3 to 5 questions, and they are among the most predictable in the entire General Awareness section because the core concepts never change. A food chain works the same way every year. Global warming causes are the same every year. Once you understand these ideas properly, you are set for every future attempt, not just this one.
The single biggest mistake aspirants make is memorising terms like "biodiversity" or "greenhouse effect" as isolated dictionary definitions instead of understanding how they connect. A student who memorises "greenhouse effect: trapping of heat by gases" without understanding why it happens will freeze the moment a question is phrased differently. This chapter builds the concepts step by step, using things you already see around you: your local park, your kitchen stove, the river near your town, so that the logic sticks even when the exact wording of a question changes.
1. What Is an Ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a community of living things (plants, animals, microorganisms) interacting with each other and with their non-living surroundings (air, water, soil, sunlight) in a particular area. The word has two halves worth remembering: eco relates to the environment, and system means all its parts work together, like gears in a machine.
Think of your neighbourhood market as an ecosystem. Vegetable sellers, fruit vendors, customers, delivery boys, and even stray dogs picking up leftovers are all interacting, exchanging, and depending on each other. Remove the vegetable seller, and customers go elsewhere; remove the customers, and the seller has no reason to set up shop. An ecosystem works exactly this way: every part depends on every other part, and pulling one thread out disturbs the whole picture.
Ecosystems can be small, like a garden pond, or vast, like an entire forest or ocean. Exam papers broadly divide ecosystems into two types:
- Terrestrial ecosystem: land-based, such as forests, deserts, and grasslands.
- Aquatic ecosystem: water-based, such as rivers, lakes, and oceans.
The Building Blocks of an Ecosystem
Every ecosystem has two categories of components:
- Biotic components: all living things, including plants, animals, insects, and bacteria.
- Abiotic components: all non-living things, including sunlight, temperature, soil, water, and air.
Memory hook: Remember "Bio is alive, A-bio has no life". The prefix "a" before "biotic" works like the "a" in "asymmetrical" (meaning "not"), so abiotic simply means "not living."
Food Chain and Food Energy Flow
A food chain shows how energy passes from one living being to another through eating and being eaten. A simple example: grass is eaten by a deer, and the deer is eaten by a tiger. Grass, deer, tiger; that sequence is a food chain.
Every food chain begins with producers, organisms that make their own food using sunlight, mainly green plants, through a process called photosynthesis. Next come consumers, which cannot make their own food and must eat something else.
Consumers are divided further:
- Primary consumers: eat producers directly (herbivores, like a deer eating grass).
- Secondary consumers: eat primary consumers (carnivores or omnivores, like a fox eating a rabbit).
- Tertiary consumers: sit at or near the top of the chain, eating secondary consumers (like a tiger eating a fox).
Finally come decomposers, organisms like bacteria and fungi that break down dead plants and animals, returning nutrients to the soil so producers can use them again. Without decomposers, dead matter would simply pile up forever and nutrients would never recycle back into the earth.
Picture a food chain like the seating arrangement at a traditional Indian wedding buffet line. The rice and vegetables (producers) are served first. Guests who take only vegetarian food (primary consumers) come next. Some guests then pile extra items taken from others' plates onto their own in a chaotic second round (secondary and tertiary consumers). And at the very end, whatever is left on discarded plates gets cleared away and recycled into the next day's compost (decomposers), keeping the whole system going.
Exam trap: Students often think a food chain is a straight, isolated line, but in nature these chains overlap and interconnect into a food web, since most animals eat more than one type of food. If an exam question mentions multiple interconnected chains, the correct term is food web, not food chain.
2. Common Types of Pollution
Pollution means the addition of any harmful substance to the environment that damages air, water, soil, or living beings. SSC exams frequently test the different types and their major causes.
Air Pollution
Air pollution happens when harmful gases, smoke, or dust particles mix into the air we breathe. Common causes tested in exams:
- Burning of fossil fuels (petrol, diesel, coal) in vehicles and factories
- Industrial smoke and emissions
- Crop residue burning by farmers, especially seen around Delhi-NCR every winter
- Construction dust
Major air pollutants tested: Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Particulate Matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10). PM 2.5 refers to particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres, so tiny they can enter deep into human lungs. Water Pollution
Water pollution occurs when harmful substances contaminate rivers, lakes, groundwater, or oceans. Common causes:
- Industrial waste discharged directly into rivers without treatment
- Untreated sewage from towns and cities
- Agricultural runoff carrying pesticides and fertilisers
- Plastic waste and religious offerings dumped into rivers
The Ganga and Yamuna rivers are frequently referenced in exam questions and news reports about water pollution and cleanup efforts in India.
Soil Pollution
Soil pollution happens when harmful chemicals, plastic waste, or industrial residue degrade the quality of land. Overuse of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in farming, along with dumping of untreated industrial and household waste, are the main causes tested.
Noise Pollution
Noise pollution is unwanted or excessive sound that disturbs the environment, common in Indian cities from traffic horns, construction, and loudspeakers. It is measured in decibels (dB). Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can damage hearing and increase stress, a fact examiners occasionally test as a general awareness point.
Memory hook: Remember "AWSN" for the four pollution types most tested: Air, Water, Soil, Noise. Think of it as the sound a scolding parent makes, "Aw-son," when the neighbourhood gets dirtier every year.
3. Climate Change Basics
Climate refers to the average weather pattern of a region over a long period, usually 30 years or more, unlike weather, which describes short-term conditions like today's rain or tomorrow's heat. Exam trap: questions often test this exact distinction; weather changes day to day, climate is the long-term average pattern.
The Greenhouse Effect
The greenhouse effect is a natural process where certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun, keeping Earth warm enough to support life. Without any greenhouse effect at all, Earth would be far too cold for life to survive. So the greenhouse effect itself is not the villain; the problem is when human activity produces too much of these gases, trapping excess heat and warming the planet beyond its natural balance.
Think of the greenhouse effect like a parked car with its windows rolled up on a sunny day. Sunlight enters through the glass and warms the seats and dashboard. That heat then struggles to escape back out through the glass, so the inside of the car becomes hotter than the outside air. Earth's atmosphere behaves the same way: certain gases let sunlight in easily but slow down the heat trying to escape, keeping the planet warmer than it would otherwise be.
The main greenhouse gases tested in exams:
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2): released mainly by burning fossil fuels and deforestation, the biggest contributor

Global warming is the direct real-world consequence of an intensified greenhouse effect.

- Melting of glaciers and polar ice caps

- More frequent and intense heat waves
- Changing rainfall patterns, affecting agriculture
- Increased frequency of extreme weather events like cyclones
Ozone Layer Depletion
The ozone layer is a protective layer in Earth's upper atmosphere (the stratosphere) that absorbs most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, shielding living beings on the surface. Without it, UV radiation reaching Earth would cause serious harm to human skin, eyes, and crops.
Ozone depletion happens mainly due to certain man-made chemicals called CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons), once widely used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and aerosol sprays. When released into the atmosphere, CFCs break down ozone molecules.
Exam trap: Students frequently confuse ozone depletion with global warming, treating them as the same problem. They are different issues with different causes. - Sustainable development: development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, essentially "growth without destroying tomorrow's resources today."
- Carbon footprint: the total amount of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide, produced directly or indirectly by a person, organisation, or activity.
- Renewable energy: energy sources that naturally replenish and do not run out, such as solar, wind, and hydro power.
- Non-renewable energy: energy sources that are limited and take millions of years to form, such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
- Endangered species: a species at serious risk of becoming extinct in the near future, like the Bengal tiger or the Great Indian Bustard.
- Extinct species: a species that no longer exists anywhere on Earth, like the dodo.

Yesterday's newspaper (non-renewable), once read and used, is gone in that form forever; you cannot regenerate the same sheet of newsprint.
Exam trap: Students sometimes assume "endangered" and "extinct" mean the same level of risk. They do not. Endangered means still surviving but at serious risk. Extinct means gone completely, with zero individuals left anywhere. A question about the dodo bird always points to extinct, never endangered.
