Physical Geography of Andhra Pradesh — Relief and the Eastern Ghats

Introduction

Physical geography questions form a predictable and scoreable portion of the AP SI and Constable General Knowledge paper, precisely because the underlying facts — the state's boundaries, its physiographic divisions, the names and heights of its major hill ranges — are fixed and testable with simple recall. Andhra Pradesh, in its present post-2014 form, is a coastal state stretching along the Bay of Bengal from the Odisha border in the north to the Tamil Nadu border in the south, bordered inland by Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at various points along its perimeter. Its physical landscape falls into three broad divisions that any serious aspirant must be able to describe and distinguish: the narrow, fertile Coastal Andhra plain running along the Bay of Bengal; the Eastern Ghats, a broken, discontinuous line of hills running roughly parallel to the coast; and the Rayalaseema plateau, the drier southwestern portion of the state that forms part of the wider Deccan plateau system. This chapter works through each of these divisions in turn, with particular attention to the Eastern Ghats — the range most frequently tested for peak names, constituent hill systems and the districts they run through. Aspirants preparing for the AP SI and Constable exams should treat this chapter as a companion to the following chapters on rivers and climate, since the three together — relief, drainage and climate — form a single interconnected system: the Eastern Ghats determine where rivers cut gorges and where rainfall is orographically enhanced, the rivers determine where the fertile deltas and irrigation commands lie, and the resulting rainfall and soil patterns determine the sharp divide between humid coastal Andhra and semi-arid Rayalaseema.

Location, Extent and Boundaries

Andhra Pradesh, after the 2014 bifurcation that created Telangana as a separate state, retains the entire length of the state's Bay of Bengal coastline — approximately 974 kilometres, the second-longest coastline of any Indian state after Gujarat. The state's area after bifurcation is approximately 1,62,970 square kilometres. To its north lies Odisha, sharing a boundary along the Eastern Ghats hill tracts; to the northwest and west lies Chhattisgarh and Telangana; to the southwest lies Karnataka; and to the south lies Tamil Nadu. The Bay of Bengal forms the entire eastern boundary. This geography — a long, narrow coastal strip backed by hills and then by a drier interior plateau — is the single most important organising fact for understanding the state's climate, agriculture, river systems and population distribution, all covered in the chapters that follow this one.

The Three Physiographic Divisions

1. The Coastal Andhra Plains

Running the length of the state's coastline from Srikakulam in the north to Nellore in the south, the coastal plain is a strip of generally flat, fertile land built up by the alluvial deposits of the state's major rivers, chiefly the Godavari and the Krishna. This plain is at its widest and most agriculturally significant in the Godavari and Krishna river deltas, where centuries of silt deposition combined with nineteenth-century irrigation engineering (discussed in the next chapter) created some of the most productive rice-growing tracts in India, earning the coastal delta districts the popular title "rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh." The coastal plain narrows considerably in the north, around Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam, where the Eastern Ghats approach close to the shoreline, and widens again in the central and southern coastal stretch.

2. The Eastern Ghats

The Eastern Ghats are not a single continuous mountain range in the manner of the Himalayas or even the Western Ghats; they are a broken, discontinuous series of hill ranges and plateaus running in a general northeast-to-southwest direction, cut through at intervals by the state's major rivers as those rivers cross from the interior plateau to the coastal plain. In Andhra Pradesh, the Eastern Ghats run through the northern coastal districts (Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, the Alluri Sitharama Raju agency tracts, East and West Godavari) and reappear further south and inland through the Nallamala, Palakonda, Velikonda and Seshachalam hill systems that thread through the Rayalaseema and southern coastal districts before petering out near the Tamil Nadu border. Geologically, the Eastern Ghats are much older and more heavily eroded than the Western Ghats, composed largely of ancient charnockite, khondalite and granite gneiss rock formations, which is why they present as a broken series of hills and plateaus rather than a single sharp mountain wall.

3. The Rayalaseema Plateau

Rayalaseema — comprising the districts of Kurnool, Anantapur (Sri Sathya Sai and Anantapur post-2022), Kadapa (YSR district) and Chittoor along with their reorganised successors — occupies the southwestern portion of the state and forms part of the southern extension of the Deccan plateau. This is the driest and most drought-prone part of Andhra Pradesh, characterised by rocky, undulating terrain, thinner soils, and a semi-arid climate quite different from the humid tropical conditions of coastal Andhra, a contrast examined in detail in the climate chapter that follows this one. The name "Rayalaseema" itself means "land of the kings," a reference to the region's historical association with the Vijayanagara Empire.

Major Hill Ranges and Peaks of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh

For examination purposes, the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh are best understood as a set of named sub-ranges rather than as a single feature. In the north, around Visakhapatnam and the Alluri Sitharama Raju district, the hills reach their greatest elevation in the state: Arma Konda (also spelt Armakonda), near Ananthagiri in the Visakhapatnam hill tracts, is generally cited as the highest peak of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh, with an elevation of approximately 1,680 metres. Other notable elevations in this northern cluster include the Galikonda and Sinkaram peaks in the same general hill tract, and the Araku Valley — a well-known hill-station and tribal-heritage tourist destination — sits within this northern Eastern Ghats segment at an elevation of roughly 900-1,300 metres, known for its cooler climate, coffee plantations, and tribal (mainly Adivasi) population.

Further south, the Eastern Ghats reappear as the Nallamala Hills, a substantial range running through Kurnool, Prakasam, Kadapa (YSR) and Guntur districts (with a portion extending into Nalgonda district of Telangana). The Nallamala range is ecologically significant as the location of the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, one of India's largest tiger reserves, and it is also the site of the pilgrimage town of Srisailam on the banks of the Krishna river, which cuts a dramatic gorge through the range. Continuing south, the Palakonda and Velikonda ranges run through the southern coastal and Rayalaseema districts, and the Seshachalam Hills, another prominent Eastern Ghats segment, are famous chiefly as the location of the Tirumala hills and the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple near Tirupati in Chittoor district — meaning the state's single most visited pilgrimage site sits directly within an Eastern Ghats sub-range. Geology and Rock Formations

The Eastern Ghats belong to one of the oldest geological formations in peninsular India, dominated by Precambrian metamorphic rocks — chiefly khondalites (garnet-sillimanite gneiss) and charnockites — that are billions of years old and among the most ancient rock types found anywhere on the subcontinent. This ancient, heavily weathered geology explains why the Eastern Ghats lack the sharp, youthful relief of newer mountain systems: millions of years of erosion have worn the range down into a broken series of hills, plateaus and residual peaks rather than a continuous ridge. The Rayalaseema plateau, by contrast, sits on the granite-gneiss and schist formations typical of the wider Deccan plateau's southern margin, with occasional outcrops of the Cuddapah (Kadapa) Basin's distinctive sedimentary rock sequence — the Kadapa Basin is itself a geologically significant feature, one of the major Proterozoic sedimentary basins of peninsular India, known for its shale, limestone, quartzite and sandstone formations and for hosting mineral resources including barytes (of which Andhra Pradesh, notably the Mangampeta mine in the Kadapa/YSR district area, is a globally significant producer) as well as limestone, asbestos and other industrial minerals.

Drainage and the Role of Rivers in Shaping Relief

The Eastern Ghats are cut through at several points by the state's major east-flowing rivers as they descend from the Deccan plateau to the coastal plain, and these river gaps are among the most geographically significant locations in the state. The Godavari river cuts through the Eastern Ghats near Rajahmundry via the Papikonda hills (Papi Hills), a scenic gorge stretch now developed as an ecotourism destination and the location of the Papikonda National Park; the Krishna river cuts through the Nallamala range at Srisailam, forming a deep gorge exploited for hydroelectric power generation at the Srisailam Dam. These river gaps are geographically important because they are the points where the otherwise continuous barrier of the Eastern Ghats becomes passable, historically shaping trade and settlement routes between the interior plateau and the coast, and today shaping the location of major dam and hydropower projects, which are covered in detail in the next chapter on rivers and water resources.

Coastal Landforms: Lakes, Lagoons and Barrier Features

Besides the major river gorges at Rajahmundry (Godavari) and Srisailam (Krishna) already noted, minor hill passes through the Nallamala and Palakonda ranges have historically linked Rayalaseema towns such as Kurnool and Kadapa with the coastal districts, while the Araku Valley route through the northern Eastern Ghats — now followed closely by the scenic Kirandul (Visakhapatnam-Araku-Koraput) railway line — is one of India's most celebrated hill railway journeys, threading through numerous tunnels and over high viaducts as it climbs from the port city of Visakhapatnam into the Eastern Ghats plateau.

Forests and Protected Areas of the Physiographic Zones

Andhra Pradesh's Eastern Ghats belt carries the bulk of the state's remaining dense forest cover, ranging from tropical moist deciduous forest on the wetter, higher northern stretches around Araku and Paderu to drier tropical dry deciduous forest further south through the Nallamala tract.
