Introduction
Rivers occupy a place in AP GK examinations second only to the state's political history, and for good reason: Andhra Pradesh's economy, its major cities, its irrigation politics and much of its modern engineering heritage are inseparable from the Godavari and Krishna river systems that cross the state from the Deccan plateau to the Bay of Bengal. This chapter covers the state's principal rivers — their origins, courses, tributaries and the major dams and barrages built upon them — along with the smaller but locally important rivers of Rayalaseema and north coastal Andhra, and closes with an overview of the irrigation projects that have shaped the state's agricultural geography. Aspirants should pay particular attention to origin points (most AP rivers do not originate within the state itself, a frequently tested distractor), the location of major dams, and the names of engineers and barrages associated with each system. As a general rule worth memorising before working through the details below: every major perennial river of Andhra Pradesh — Godavari, Krishna and Penna alike — rises in a neighbouring state (Maharashtra or Karnataka) and only enters Andhra Pradesh partway through its course, which is why interstate water-sharing arrangements, discussed later in this chapter, are such a persistent feature of the state's water-resource politics.
The Godavari River System
The Godavari is the largest river of peninsular India and the second-longest river in the country after the Ganga, and its passage through Andhra Pradesh forms the single most important riverine geography fact in the entire syllabus. The Godavari originates at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik in Maharashtra, far outside Andhra Pradesh, and flows broadly southeastward across Maharashtra, briefly touching Chhattisgarh, before entering Telangana and then Andhra Pradesh. Within Andhra Pradesh, the river passes through the Alluri Sitharama Raju and East/West Godavari district areas, cutting its dramatic gorge through the Eastern Ghats at the Papikonda hills (covered in the previous chapter) before spreading into a wide, fertile delta near Rajahmundry and Konaseema district as it approaches the Bay of Bengal. The Godavari delta, together with the Krishna delta further south, forms the agricultural heartland of coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The single most important engineering structure on the Godavari within Andhra Pradesh is the Dowleswaram Barrage, built across the river near Rajahmundry by the British engineer Sir Arthur Cotton and completed in 1852 (also historically referred to as the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage, or Godavari Anicut). This barrage transformed the Godavari delta from a flood-prone, only partially cultivated tract into one of the most productive irrigated rice-growing regions in India, and Cotton is consequently remembered with something close to reverence in the delta districts, with statues and commemorations across East and West Godavari district towns. A modern replacement barrage, the Dowleswaram Cotton Barrage / Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage rebuilt in the later twentieth century, continues to regulate the river for irrigation across the delta today. Further upstream and inland, the Polavaram Project, a major multipurpose dam under construction on the Godavari in West Godavari/Eluru district, is intended to provide large-scale irrigation, drinking water and hydroelectric power, and is one of the most closely watched (and most politically significant) infrastructure projects in the state's contemporary affairs, discussed further in the agriculture and irrigation chapter later in this book. The Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme, built to transfer Godavari water into the Krishna delta system via the Polavaram right canal alignment, is another Godavari-linked project of note for exam purposes, illustrating the modern trend toward interlinking the state's two major rivers to balance water availability between the Godavari's relatively surplus flows and the more heavily allocated Krishna.
Major tributaries that join the Godavari before or within Andhra Pradesh include the Indravati, Sabari (Sileru) and Sarabanga on the north bank, draining parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh and the northern agency tracts, and the Manjira, Maner and Pranahita on routes through Telangana upstream of the Andhra Pradesh border. Within Andhra Pradesh's present boundaries the Sabari river, joining from the northeast, is the most significant Godavari tributary.
The Krishna River System
The Krishna is the second major river of Andhra Pradesh and the fourth-longest river in India. It originates at Mahabaleshwar in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, flowing eastward across Maharashtra and Karnataka before entering Telangana and then Andhra Pradesh, where it eventually reaches the Bay of Bengal through its own delta centred on the city of Vijayawada. Within Andhra Pradesh, the Krishna's course is marked by two major dam and barrage structures of exceptional importance: the Srisailam Dam, built where the river cuts its gorge through the Nallamala Hills (Eastern Ghats), a large hydroelectric and irrigation project; and the Nagarjunasagar Dam, further downstream, one of the largest masonry dams in the world by volume, which straddles the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana border and supplies irrigation water to both states through its canal system. Nearer the coast, the Prakasam Barrage at Vijayawada (built on the site of an earlier anicut and named for Tanguturi Prakasam) regulates the river for the Krishna delta's irrigation system, performing for the Krishna delta broadly the same function that the Dowleswaram Barrage performs for the Godavari delta.
The Krishna's most significant tributary as it enters Andhra Pradesh territory is the Tungabhadra, itself formed by the confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers in Karnataka; the Tungabhadra flows along part of the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka/Telangana boundary before joining the Krishna, and the Tungabhadra Dam (located mostly in Karnataka, near Hospet) is an important joint-use irrigation project for the wider Krishna basin, including parts of Rayalaseema. Other Krishna tributaries relevant to the state include the Musi (which flows through Hyderabad in Telangana before joining the Krishna) and, within Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema districts, several smaller seasonal streams that feed the Krishna basin's southern catchment.
Rivers of Rayalaseema: The Penna (Pennar) System
Rayalaseema's principal river is the Penna (also spelt Pennar), which, notably, originates outside Andhra Pradesh — at Nandi Hills in Karnataka — and flows eastward across Anantapur, Kadapa (YSR) and Nellore districts before reaching the Bay of Bengal near Nellore town. The Penna basin is far smaller in discharge than either the Godavari or Krishna and is subject to highly seasonal, monsoon-dependent flow, contributing to the chronic water stress that characterises much of Rayalaseema's agriculture. The Somasila Dam, on the Penna river in Nellore district, is the principal storage structure on this system, feeding irrigation canals across the lower Penna basin. Important tributaries of the Penna include the Cheyyeru, Sagileru and Papagni rivers, all of which drain parts of the Rayalaseema plateau and are similarly seasonal in character. Because the Penna basin lies substantially within the semi-arid Rayalaseema climate zone (discussed in the next chapter), water scarcity here is a recurring theme in the state's irrigation and drought-relief policy, distinguishing the Penna sharply from the perennial, monsoon-and-glacier-independent-but-catchment-rich Godavari and Krishna systems.
Rivers of North Coastal Andhra: Vamsadhara and Nagavali
The northernmost coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh — Srikakulam and adjoining areas — are drained by two comparatively smaller but locally important rivers: the Vamsadhara and the Nagavali. Both rivers originate in the hill tracts of neighbouring Odisha and flow southeastward into Andhra Pradesh before draining into the Bay of Bengal near Srikakulam district's coastline. The Vamsadhara is regulated by irrigation projects including the Vamsadhara Project, developed jointly with Odisha given the river's interstate character, while the Nagavali similarly supports irrigation in the Srikakulam-Vizianagaram belt. These two rivers, while modest by the standards of the Godavari and Krishna, are important locally as the primary freshwater source for the north coastal Andhra agricultural economy and are regularly tested as a pair in AP GK papers precisely because their similar origin and course make them easy to confuse.
Other Notable Rivers
The Swarnamukhi river, a smaller but culturally significant stream, flows near Tirupati in Chittoor district and is associated with the region's temple traditions. The Gundlakamma river drains parts of Prakasam district and reaches the Bay of Bengal independently of the Krishna and Penna systems. Minor east-flowing streams throughout the coastal districts supplement the major river systems, though for examination purposes the Godavari, Krishna, Penna, Vamsadhara and Nagavali form the core set of rivers an aspirant must know cold.
Interstate River-Water Disputes
Because none of Andhra Pradesh's major rivers originate within the state, and because both the Godavari and Krishna are shared across multiple upper riparian states, interstate water-sharing disputes are a recurring and important feature of the state's river geography, frequently tested alongside pure physical-geography facts. The Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal, first constituted in 1969 (the Bachawat Tribunal) and reconstituted later to address post-bifurcation sharing between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, has been the principal mechanism for allocating Krishna waters among Maharashtra, Karnataka and the two Telugu states. The Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal similarly addressed sharing among Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh (undivided) and Odisha, delivering its award in 1980. Since the 2014 bifurcation, water-sharing between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana specifically has become an especially sensitive and closely watched issue, given that several major reservoirs (Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar) sit on or near the new interstate boundary and serve irrigation commands in both states; the Krishna River Management Board and Godavari River Management Board were established after 2014 specifically to oversee operations and allocations on these shared structures. These institutional arrangements are covered in greater depth in the chapters on state government and contemporary affairs, but aspirants should recognise the tribunal names and the basic fact pattern — Bachawat Tribunal for Krishna (1969), Godavari award (1980) — as a recurring exam theme.
Groundwater and Minor Irrigation
Beyond the major river systems, Andhra Pradesh's agricultural economy depends substantially on groundwater extraction and minor irrigation tanks, particularly in Rayalaseema, where perennial river flow is limited and rainfall is erratic. The region has a long historical tradition of tank irrigation (locally called "cheruvu"), with thousands of small and medium irrigation tanks constructed over centuries to capture and store monsoon runoff for use during the dry season; many of these tanks date to the Vijayanagara and pre-Vijayanagara periods and remain in use today, supplemented by modern borewell-based groundwater extraction. This tank-irrigation tradition is worth remembering as a contrast to the canal-fed delta irrigation of coastal Andhra: two very different irrigation cultures coexist within the same state, one built around large perennial rivers and modern barrages, the other around small monsoon-fed tanks and groundwater in the drier interior.

The Godavari and Krishna Deltas Compared
Though often mentioned together as the "rice bowl" of Andhra Pradesh, the Godavari and Krishna deltas differ in scale and internal structure in ways worth distinguishing for exam purposes. The Godavari delta, fed by a larger and more consistent river discharge, splits into two principal distributary channels near Dowleswaram — the Gautami Godavari and the Vasishta Godavari — named after sage Gautama and sage Vasishtha respectively, each further branching into smaller distributaries as the river fans out across the present-day Konaseema, East Godavari and West Godavari district areas before reaching the sea through multiple mouths. The Krishna delta, centred on the Prakasam Barrage at Vijayawada, is somewhat smaller in area but no less intensively cultivated, spreading across the present Krishna, NTR, Eluru and parts of Guntur/Bapatla districts. Both deltas support dense, multiple-cropping paddy cultivation, extensive aquaculture (particularly shrimp farming in the tidal and brackish-water fringes), and some of the highest rural population densities in the state, a direct consequence of the agricultural productivity that Cotton's and later engineers' barrage works made possible.
Hydropower Generation on Andhra Pradesh's Rivers
Beyond irrigation, the state's major dams contribute significantly to power generation. The Srisailam Left Bank and Right Bank power stations (the left bank station located in Telangana territory post-bifurcation, the right bank station in Andhra Pradesh) harness the head created by the Krishna's passage through the Nallamala gorge; Srisailam is additionally notable for its pumped-storage hydroelectric capability, allowing water to be pumped back into the upper reservoir during periods of surplus electricity to be released again during peak demand. The Nagarjunasagar Dam similarly incorporates a hydroelectric power station within its structure. On the Godavari, the Polavaram Project's design includes a hydroelectric component in addition to its irrigation and water-supply functions. Smaller hydropower installations exist at various points along the Sileru river system (a Godavari tributary in the northern agency tracts, shared with the adjoining state), historically among the earliest hydropower developments in the region. This hydropower dimension is a useful bridge to the state's broader energy-sector content covered in the economy chapters later in this book.
Major Dams and Irrigation Projects: A Closer Look
Dowleswaram Barrage / Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage
Completed in 1852 under the direction of Sir Arthur Cotton, this barrage across the Godavari near Rajahmundry is the founding structure of coastal Andhra's modern irrigation economy, converting the delta into one of India's most reliable rice-producing tracts and directly enabling the demographic and economic growth of the Godavari delta districts over the following century and a half.
Nagarjunasagar Dam
Built across the Krishna river, straddling the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana border near Nagarjunasagar town, this dam is renowned as one of the largest masonry (stone) dams in the world by volume, and its reservoir submerged the historic Buddhist site of Nagarjunakonda, whose most significant monuments were relocated to an island museum within the reservoir before submersion. The dam serves major irrigation commands on both sides of the present state boundary.
Srisailam Dam
Located where the Krishna cuts through the Nallamala Hills, the Srisailam Dam serves both hydroelectric generation and irrigation, and its reservoir lies within the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, making it one of the few major dam sites in India situated inside a designated tiger reserve. The dam's twin power stations — one on the left bank in Telangana and one on the right bank in Andhra Pradesh, following the 2014 bifurcation — illustrate how a single physical structure built before the state's division now operates as a jointly managed asset between the two successor states, a pattern repeated at Nagarjunasagar and underscoring why river-water management institutions such as the Krishna River Management Board remain central to the two states' ongoing relationship.
Prakasam Barrage
Located at Vijayawada across the Krishna river, on the site of an earlier nineteenth-century anicut, the Prakasam Barrage (named after Tanguturi Prakasam) regulates water for the Krishna delta's irrigation system, and the barrage roadway also serves as an important road link across the river at Vijayawada.
Polavaram Project
A major ongoing multipurpose project on the Godavari in the West Godavari/Eluru district area, intended to provide large-scale irrigation, municipal and industrial water supply, and hydroelectric power generation, along with an interlinking canal to transfer surplus Godavari water toward the Krishna basin. Its scale and cost, along with interstate and rehabilitation issues, make it one of the most frequently discussed infrastructure projects in current-affairs coverage of the state.
The Buckingham Canal and Coastal Navigation
Alongside the irrigation-focused barrages and dams, Andhra Pradesh's coastal river geography includes an important nineteenth-century navigation work: the Buckingham Canal, a brackish-water canal running parallel to the Bay of Bengal coast, originally constructed to link Chennai (Madras) with the Godavari and Krishna delta systems for the inland movement of goods, particularly rice, before modern road and rail networks made such canal transport less essential. The canal, portions of which pass through the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh (Nellore, Prakasam), connects with the natural backwaters and river mouths along the coast and is today of greater interest for its ecological role — supporting brackish-water fisheries and wetland habitats — than for active commercial navigation, though limited stretches still see local boat traffic. Its construction in stages through the nineteenth century, connecting with the Godavari and Krishna delta canal systems built under Cotton's broader irrigation and navigation vision, illustrates how the colonial-era engineering of coastal Andhra was conceived as an integrated system of irrigation, flood control and inland navigation rather than as isolated dam projects.
Mangrove Ecosystems of the River Estuaries
Where the Godavari and Krishna meet the Bay of Bengal, their estuaries support significant mangrove forest ecosystems, among the most ecologically important coastal habitats in the state. The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, located at the Godavari estuary in the East Godavari/Kakinada district area, protects one of India's largest mangrove forest tracts after the Sundarbans, providing critical breeding habitat for fish and crustacean species that support the region's fishing economy as well as nesting habitat for various coastal bird species. A smaller but locally significant mangrove tract exists at the Krishna estuary near Machilipatnam, sometimes referenced as the Krishna Wildlife Sanctuary.
