Use this schedule to convert this guide into exam-day reflexes. Each day should take 40–60 minutes; treat it as a fixed appointment rather than a flexible "if I have time" task.

Week 1 — Foundations: Clue Categories and Strategy

  • Day 1: Read Section 2 (the five clue categories) fully. For each category, find one real example from any newspaper editorial and label it correctly.
  • Day 2: Read Section 3 (core solving strategy). Practise the "read the whole passage first" habit on any one passage from Section 9, without attempting to solve any blank yet — just read for overall meaning and tone.
  • Day 3: Attempt Passage One (Section 9.1) fully timed at eight minutes. Do not check answers yet.
  • Day 4: Review Passage One against the answer key. For every blank you got wrong, write down which of the five categories (Section 2) it belonged to.
  • Day 5: Read Section 4.1–4.2 (preposition and article blanks). Attempt all worked mini-examples again from memory, covering the answers first.
  • Day 6: Read Section 4.3–4.4 (conjunction and tense blanks). Repeat the same self-test method.
  • Day 7: Rest or light review — skim Section 3 once more.

Week 2 — Grammatical Blanks in Depth

  • Day 8: Read Section 4.5 (voice blanks) and re-attempt all worked mini-examples from 4.1–4.5 from memory in one sitting.
  • Day 9: Attempt Passage Two (Section 9.2) fully timed at eight minutes.
  • Day 10: Review Passage Two against the key, focusing specifically on any tense or voice blanks you missed; re-read the relevant rule in Section 4.
  • Day 11: Write five original sentences of your own, each with one blank, testing a preposition rule from Section 4.1 that was not already used as a worked example.
  • Day 12: Repeat Day 11's exercise for article blanks (Section 4.2).
  • Day 13: Repeat Day 11's exercise for conjunction blanks (Section 4.3).
  • Day 14: Rest or light review — flashcards of any grammatical rule you keep forgetting.

Week 3 — Vocabulary and Collocation

  • Day 15: Read Section 5 in full. Study clusters 1–18 of the reference table until you can explain the deciding distinction for each without looking.
  • Day 16: Study clusters 19–36 of the reference table the same way.
  • Day 17: Attempt Passage Three (Section 9.3) fully timed at eight minutes.
  • Day 18: Review Passage Three against the key, paying special attention to any collocation or formal-register blanks you missed.
  • Day 19: Read Section 6 in full. Copy out collocations 1–21 into your own notebook, each inside a fresh original sentence you write yourself.
  • Day 20: Repeat Day 19 for collocations 22–42.
  • Day 21: Rest or light review — shuffle through your own collocation notebook from Days 19–20.

Week 4 — The New Pattern and Traps

  • Day 22: Read Section 7 in full, twice. On the second read, work through the two worked examples (7.2 and 7.3) with the explanation covered, trying to solve them yourself first.
  • Day 23: Attempt Passage Four (Section 9.4) fully timed at ten minutes (allow extra time for the double-filler blank).
  • Day 24: Review Passage Four against the key, focusing specifically on Q67, the double-filler blank; re-read Section 7.6's method and confirm you can reproduce the four-step sequence from memory.
  • Day 25: Read Section 8, traps 1–13. For each, write your own one-line example distinct from the guide's.
  • Day 26: Read Section 8, traps 14–26, and repeat the same exercise.
  • Day 27: Attempt Passage Five (Section 9.5) fully timed at ten minutes.
  • Day 28: Review Passage Five against the key, and cross-check every mistake against the trap catalogue in Section 8 — identify which named trap caught you each time.

Week 5 — Integration and Speed

  • Day 29: Re-attempt Passage One from scratch, timed at six minutes this time (a tighter limit than Week 1). Compare your score and time against your Day 3 attempt.
  • Day 30: Re-attempt Passage Two, timed at six minutes.
  • Day 31: Re-attempt Passage Three, timed at six minutes.
  • Day 32: Re-attempt Passage Four, timed at seven minutes (allowing slightly more time for the double-filler blank).
  • Day 33: Re-attempt Passage Five, timed at seven minutes.
  • Day 34: Review every mistake across Days 29–33 together. Identify whether your errors now cluster around a specific category (grammar, vocabulary, collocation, or the new pattern) and revisit that specific section.
  • Day 35: Rest or light review — the Section 12 quick reference sheet only.

Week 6 — Full Simulation and Final Consolidation

  • Day 36: Full mock — attempt all five passages back to back (100 blanks total), timed at 40 minutes total, without looking at the guide.
  • Day 37: Review every question you got wrong in Day 36's mock. Re-read the specific rule, collocation, or trap for each mistake.
  • Day 38: Teach-back session — explain the five clue categories from Section 2 and the double-filler format from Section 7 out loud to yourself or a study partner, as if teaching them for the first time.
  • Day 39: Read Section 10 (Vocabulary and Collocation Consolidation) end to end as a scanning pass, ticking off any item whose meaning or usage you cannot instantly recall, and revisit that item's home section.
  • Day 40: Second full mock — attempt all five passages again, timed at 32 minutes this time, to build speed alongside accuracy.
  • Day 41: Light revision day — collocation notebook only, plus a fresh skim of Sections 5 and 8 (the two highest-frequency exam sections).
  • Day 42: Final check — find a fresh, unfamiliar cloze passage from any previous year's paper (SSC, Bank, or Railway) and attempt it cold, applying everything from this guide. Note your accuracy and compare it against your Day 3 baseline to measure real improvement.

By the end of this six-week plan, cloze passages should shift from feeling like the least predictable part of the English section to one of your most reliable scoring areas — because you will have learned to recognise, by name, exactly which of five categories every single blank belongs to, and exactly which method each category demands.

11.1 Two Optional Extension Days, If Your Exam Date Allows

If your exam is still some weeks away after finishing the six-week plan, add these two extension days before your final pre-exam revision begins:

  • Extension Day A: Attempt Quick-Fire Bonus Round One (Section 9.8, fifty items) in one sitting, timed at twenty-five minutes. Tally your errors by category, exactly as described in Section 9.10, and revisit the corresponding grammatical subtype in Section 4.
  • Extension Day B: Attempt Quick-Fire Bonus Round Two (Section 9.9, thirty items) in one sitting, timed at fifteen minutes. Tally your errors specifically against the vocabulary clusters in Section 5.2 and the collocation catalogue in Section 6.2, and add any word or phrase you missed to your personal collocation notebook from Week 2.
