June is bookended by the environment on one side and the year's biggest single "why this exact date" origin story — Yoga Day and the solstice — near its close.
- 4 June — International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, established by the UN General Assembly in 1982, in the wake of violence against children in armed conflict, particularly in Lebanon and Palestine at that time.
- 5 June — World Environment Day, marking the opening date in 1972 of the UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm — the conference that also led directly to the creation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) later that same year; the single largest platform globally for environmental public outreach, with a rotating annual host country.
- 8 June — World Oceans Day, first proposed at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit and officially designated by the UN General Assembly in 2008, to raise awareness of the crucial role oceans play and to promote their sustainable management.
- 12 June — World Day Against Child Labour, launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2002, to spotlight the global extent of child labour and the action needed to eliminate it.
- 14 June — World Blood Donor Day, marking the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner (born 14 June 1868), the scientist who discovered the ABO blood group system, making safe blood transfusion possible for the first time.
- 17 June — World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, marking the date in 1994 that the UN Convention to Combat Desertification was adopted, following the 1992 Rio Earth Summit's identification of desertification as a major sustainable-development challenge.
- 20 June — World Refugee Day, designated by the UN General Assembly in 2001 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, honouring the strength and courage of people forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
- 21 June — International Day of Yoga, proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a UN General Assembly address in September 2014 and adopted by the UN in December 2014, with the first observance in 2015. 21 June is deliberately the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere — the longest day of the year — chosen for its special significance in many parts of the world and its symbolic alignment with yoga's own emphasis on balance between the body, mind, and the natural cycle of the sun.
- 23 June — International Olympic Day, marking the date in 1894 that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded at the Sorbonne in Paris, on the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin.
- 26 June — International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, designated by the UN General Assembly in 1987 as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve a drug-free world.
- 29 June — National Statistics Day, marking the birth anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (born 29 June 1893), the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute and a pioneer of statistical science in India, credited with shaping the statistical framework behind India's Five-Year Plans.
Memory hook — "Longest day, oldest practice": International Day of Yoga sits precisely on the summer solstice (the longest day of the calendar) — pair the astronomical fact (longest day) with the symbolic fact (yoga as balance) and you'll never confuse the date with any nearby health day.
Practice Recall: Name the year Yoga Day was proposed at the UN, the year of its first observance, and the astronomical event 21 June marks in the Northern Hemisphere.
