Distinct from Ramsar status (a wetland-focused treaty designation), Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) are a BirdLife International classification identifying sites critical for bird conservation — some overlap with National Parks or Ramsar sites, others do not. Several sites recur across exam questions specifically for their bird associations rather than their broader wildlife status:

  • Keoladeo Ghana (Bharatpur), Rajasthan — historically the wintering ground of the Siberian crane (now no longer recorded here, a widely cited example of a locally lost migratory species), and still one of the densest breeding and wintering grounds for herons, storks, cormorants, and raptors in South Asia.
  • Chilika Lake, Odisha — the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl in India, hosting birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Baikal, and Central Asia; also the Nalabana bird sanctuary island within it.
  • Nal Sarovar, Gujarat — a shallow wetland especially known for flamingos, pelicans, and a very large diversity of migratory ducks.
  • Vedanthangal, Tamil Nadu — reputedly one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in the country (protection dates back to the 18th–19th century under local custom, formalised later), known for its painted stork and cormorant heronry.
  • Point Calimere, Tamil Nadu — a key stopover on the Central Asian Flyway for shorebirds and one of India's most significant flamingo congregation sites.
  • Sultanpur, Haryana — a small but easily accessible wetland sanctuary popular for winter waterfowl near the National Capital Region.

Memory hook for flyways: most of these northern-migrating waterfowl reach India along the Central Asian Flyway, one of nine major global bird migration flyways — a phrase worth recognising if a question names the flyway rather than a specific bird.

Memory hook (all six IBAs, in list order): "Bharatpur's King (Keoladeo) Chilled at (Chilika) Nal's place, then partied at Vedanthangal Point (Calimere) with the Sultan (Sultanpur)." Keoladeo → Chilika → Nal Sarovar → Vedanthangal → Point Calimere → Sultanpur, six names folded into one silly sentence.

Practice Recall: Before reading on, name all six Important Bird Areas listed in this book.

Answer: Keoladeo Ghana (Bharatpur), Chilika Lake, Nal Sarovar, Vedanthangal, Point Calimere, Sultanpur.
