Downstream speed D = boat speed in still water b + stream speed s. Upstream speed U = b − s. Therefore b=(D+U)/2 and s=(D−U)/2. Time is distance divided by the relevant speed.

Method before formula

If downstream and upstream times are known for equal distance, set D=L/tD and U=L/tU before using the formulas. Never add the stream speed on an upstream journey.
