Why This Chapter Matters
This chapter covers ground that RRB Group D papers return to again and again: plant basics, vitamin deficiency diseases, communicable diseases and their causes, and basic first aid. Together these topics can fetch three to five marks, and unlike physics numericals, none of it requires calculation. It only requires clear memory, which means it rewards preparation more than raw talent.
The biggest trap in this section is mixing up which disease is caused by which type of organism, and which vitamin deficiency causes which specific illness. Students who "roughly remember" vitamin names lose easy marks because the exam often gives four vitamin options that all sound plausible. The other genuinely useful part of this chapter, first aid, matters beyond the exam too. Railway work is physically demanding, often around heavy machinery and tracks, and knowing basic first aid is not just test material, it is something you may actually use on a work site one day.
1. Plant Basics — How a Plant Feeds Itself
Plants are the only living things (along with algae and some bacteria) that can make their own food from sunlight, water, and air. This process is called photosynthesis, and it happens mainly in the leaves.
The basic equation of photosynthesis: carbon dioxide plus water, in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, produces glucose (food) and oxygen. Chlorophyll is the green pigment inside a leaf's cells, held in structures called chloroplasts, and it is what makes leaves look green because it absorbs red and blue light while reflecting green light back to your eyes.
Analogy: Think of a leaf as a small solar-powered factory on a work floor. Sunlight is the electricity bill paid for free, carbon dioxide from the air and water pulled up from the roots are the raw materials, and chlorophyll is the machine operator turning those raw materials into glucose, the finished product the plant lives on. Oxygen is simply the factory's exhaust, released into the air, and lucky for us, that exhaust is exactly what we breathe.
Photosynthesis happens through tiny pores on the leaf surface called stomata, which open and close to let carbon dioxide in and let oxygen and water vapour out. Most stomata are on the underside of leaves, which reduces water loss from direct sun exposure.
Parts of a Plant and Their Jobs
A typical flowering plant has four main parts, each with a distinct job.
Roots anchor the plant in soil and absorb water and minerals. Roots also store food in some plants, like carrots and radishes, where the root itself becomes a thick storage organ. There are two main root types: taproot (one thick main root going straight down, seen in plants like mustard) and fibrous root (many thin roots spreading out, seen in plants like wheat and grass).
Stem supports the plant above ground, transports water and nutrients between roots and leaves, and in some plants stores food too (sugarcane stores sugar in its stem). Transport happens through two types of tissue: xylem, which carries water and minerals upward from roots to leaves, and phloem, which carries prepared food (glucose) from leaves to the rest of the plant, in any direction it is needed.
Exam trap: Students often think both xylem and phloem move water. Only xylem moves water and minerals, always upward. Phloem moves food, and it can move in either direction depending on where the plant needs it.
Leaves are the main site of photosynthesis, as covered above, and they also handle transpiration, the loss of water vapour through stomata, which helps pull water up the plant from the roots, much like sipping a drink through a straw creates continuous upward flow.
Flowers are the reproductive part of the plant. They contain the male part, the stamen (producing pollen), and the female part, the pistil or carpil (containing the ovary, which develops into fruit after fertilisation, with ovules inside becoming seeds). Pollination is the transfer of pollen from stamen to pistil, done by wind, water, insects, or birds, and it must happen before a flower can develop into fruit.
Respiration in Plants
Plants also respire, all the time, day and night, just like animals, breaking down glucose to release energy and giving off carbon dioxide. This surprises many students who think plants "only" do photosynthesis. During the day, a healthy plant photosynthesises faster than it respires, so it has a net release of oxygen. At night, without sunlight, only respiration happens, which is why keeping too many plants in a closed, unventilated bedroom overnight is sometimes discouraged, though the actual effect on a large room is small.
2. Diseases — Causes and Prevention
Diseases are broadly grouped by their cause: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa (parasites), or nutritional deficiency. Knowing which category a disease falls into helps you predict how it spreads and how it is prevented or treated, which is exactly what the exam tests.
Bacterial Diseases
Bacteria are single-celled organisms, some helpful (like those aiding digestion), some harmful. Common bacterial diseases include typhoid (spread through contaminated food and water, caused by Salmonella typhi), cholera (spread through contaminated water, caused by Vibrio cholerae, leading to severe diarrhoea and dehydration), tuberculosis (TB) (caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, mainly affecting the lungs, spread through air when an infected person coughs), and tetanus (caused by bacteria entering through deep wounds, especially from rusty metal, affecting the nervous system and causing muscle stiffness).
Bacterial diseases are typically treated with antibiotics, which is why a doctor prescribes a course of tablets for typhoid but not for a common cold.
Viral Diseases
Viruses are much smaller than bacteria and cannot survive or multiply outside a living host cell. Common viral diseases include the common cold and influenza (flu) (spread through respiratory droplets), measles and chickenpox (highly contagious, common in childhood, spread through air and contact), hepatitis (affects the liver; different types spread differently, hepatitis A and E mainly through contaminated food and water, hepatitis B and C mainly through blood and body fluids), dengue and chikungunya (spread by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in clean, stagnant water), and rabies (spread through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, almost always fatal once symptoms appear, which is why post-bite vaccination must happen immediately).
Exam trap: Antibiotics do not work on viral diseases. This single fact is tested repeatedly. Antibiotics kill or stop bacteria; they have no effect on viruses. Treatment for viral disease usually focuses on managing symptoms while the body's own immune system clears the virus, along with antiviral drugs for specific serious infections.
Vector-Borne Diseases
Some diseases spread through a carrier organism called a vector. Malaria is caused by a protozoan parasite (Plasmodium), spread by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. Dengue and chikungunya, as mentioned, spread through Aedes mosquitoes. Filariasis spreads through Culex mosquitoes.
Memory hook: Different mosquitoes, different diseases, different breeding spots. Remember "Any Dirty Culex, Any Clean Aedes" — Culex breeds in dirty stagnant water and spreads filariasis, Aedes breeds in clean stagnant water (like a flower pot or old tyre) and spreads dengue and chikungunya, while Anopheles (the odd one out, causing malaria) breeds in clean, slow-moving water too but is identified by its resting position, tilted at an angle to the surface.
Prevention of vector-borne diseases centres on not letting water stagnate: covering water storage containers, clearing stagnant puddles, using mosquito nets, and community fogging drives during monsoon season, when mosquito breeding peaks.
Fungal and Deficiency Diseases
Fungal infections are common on skin, especially in humid conditions, causing conditions like ringworm. They are treated with antifungal medication, not antibiotics.
Deficiency diseases are not caused by any organism at all; they happen when the body lacks a specific nutrient over time. These are covered in detail in the next section, since vitamin deficiency is one of the most exam-heavy topics in this whole chapter.
3. Vitamins and Their Deficiency Diseases
Vitamins are organic compounds the body needs in small amounts for normal growth and function. The body cannot make most vitamins on its own (with a couple of exceptions), so they must come from food. Vitamins split into two broad groups: fat-soluble (A, D, E, K, which the body can store in fat tissue) and water-soluble (B-complex and C, which the body cannot store much of, so they need regular dietary intake).

Exam trap: Vitamin C and scurvy is one of the most heavily tested pairs, and so is Vitamin D and rickets. Do not swap them. Scurvy causes bleeding gums and weakness; it is linked to sailors on long sea voyages centuries ago who had no fresh fruit for months. Rickets causes weak, bent bones in growing children due to poor calcium absorption, since Vitamin D is essential for the body to absorb calcium properly. Vitamin D is unusual because the body can make it itself, from sunlight hitting the skin, which is why it is sometimes called the "sunshine vitamin."

Minerals matter too, though the exam asks fewer questions on them. Iron deficiency causes anaemia (low haemoglobin, leading to fatigue and paleness), calcium deficiency weakens bones and teeth over time, and iodine deficiency causes goitre, a swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck, which is exactly why iodised salt was made mandatory across India, one of the country's most successful public health interventions.
4. Vaccination Basics
Vaccination works by training the immune system to recognise a disease-causing organism without the person actually getting sick from it. A vaccine typically contains a weakened, inactivated, or partial form of the germ (or, in newer vaccines, genetic instructions to build a harmless piece of it). The immune system responds by producing antibodies and forming "memory cells." If the real disease-causing organism enters the body later, memory cells recognise it instantly and mount a fast defence, usually stopping illness before it starts.
Analogy: A vaccine is like a fire drill. The building is never actually on fire, but everyone practises the escape route so thoroughly that if a real fire ever breaks out, the response is instant and organised, not confused.
India runs a Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), one of the largest public health programmes in the world, covering diseases including tuberculosis (BCG vaccine, usually given at birth), polio, diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (combined as the DPT vaccine), measles, hepatitis B, and rubella, among others, given to infants and children on a fixed schedule.
Exam trap: Do not confuse vaccination (a preventive measure given before disease exposure, training immunity in advance) with treatment (medicine given after someone is already sick). A vaccine given after full-blown infection symptoms have started generally will not cure that infection; its job is prevention, not cure. The one well-known exception tested in exams is the rabies vaccine, which can still work if given promptly after a bite, before symptoms appear, because rabies has an unusually long incubation period.
India was declared polio-free by the World Health Organization in 2014, a major public health success built on decades of the oral polio vaccine drive reaching children in even the most remote villages.
5. First Aid Basics for a Physically Demanding Job
Railway ground staff work around heavy equipment, tracks, and outdoor conditions, so basic first aid knowledge genuinely matters, not just for the exam. First aid means the immediate help given to an injured or suddenly ill person before proper medical help arrives. It cannot replace a doctor, but it can prevent a situation from becoming worse in the crucial first minutes.
For cuts and wounds: Clean the wound with clean water, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to stop bleeding, and cover it with a clean bandage. Do not apply mud, ash, or unknown substances to a wound, a habit that still causes tetanus infections in rural areas.
For burns: Cool the burn immediately under clean running water for several minutes. Do not apply ice directly, oil, or toothpaste, all of which are common but harmful home remedies that can worsen tissue damage. Cover loosely with a clean cloth and get medical help for anything beyond a minor burn.
For fractures (suspected broken bone): Do not try to straighten or move the injured limb. Keep the area still, support it in the position found using a splint if available (even a rolled newspaper or a stick tied gently with cloth), and get the person to medical help without unnecessary movement, since movement can turn a simple fracture into a more serious one.
For choking: If someone cannot breathe, cough, or speak because something is stuck in the throat, back blows between the shoulder blades are the first response, followed by abdominal thrusts if needed, aimed at dislodging the object using a sudden burst of pressure.
For electric shock: Never touch a person still in contact with the electric source with bare hands. First cut off the power source or use a dry wooden stick or dry cloth to separate the person from the source, then check breathing and seek medical help immediately. This matters directly for railway environments, where electrical equipment and overhead wires are a real daily hazard.
For heatstroke (relevant for outdoor railway work in Indian summers): Move the person to shade immediately, remove excess clothing, cool the body with water or a wet cloth, and give sips of water only if the person is conscious and able to swallow. Heatstroke is a genuine medical emergency, not just tiredness, and needs urgent medical attention.
Exam trap: A common wrong answer choice in first-aid questions is applying ice directly to burns. Direct ice contact can damage skin tissue further; the correct first response is cool running water, not ice.
Memory hook: For the core first-aid priorities, remember "Stop, Cool, Cover, Call" — Stop the bleeding, Cool a burn, Cover a wound, Call for help. This order works for most everyday injuries you are likely to encounter.
For sprains (a stretched or torn ligament, common around the ankle on uneven railway platforms and yards): the standard first response follows the RICE method: Rest the joint, apply Ice wrapped in cloth (never directly on skin), Compress gently with a bandage, and Elevate the limb above heart level to reduce swelling. Do not massage a fresh sprain or apply heat in the first 24 to 48 hours, since heat increases blood flow to the area and can worsen swelling.
For fainting, lay the person flat and raise the legs slightly to help blood flow back to the brain, loosen tight clothing around the neck, and ensure fresh air. Do not crowd around the person or splash water on the face aggressively; check breathing first and give the person a few minutes before offering water, only once fully conscious.
For a foreign object in the eye, never rub the eye, since rubbing can scratch the cornea. Blink repeatedly to encourage natural tearing, or rinse gently with clean water. If the object does not come out on its own, cover the eye loosely and get medical help rather than trying to remove it with fingers or a sharp object.
A basic first-aid box, kept at home and ideally at any workplace, should include a sterile bandage roll, cotton, antiseptic solution, adhesive tape, a pair of scissors, disposable gloves, and a thermometer. Knowing where this box is kept, and checking it is not expired, matters as much as knowing how to use it.
Public Health Awareness
Beyond individual first aid, general health awareness prevents a large share of common illness. Regular handwashing with soap breaks the chain of transmission for many bacterial and viral diseases spread through contaminated hands touching food or the face. Drinking boiled or properly filtered water instead of untreated water prevents most water-borne bacterial diseases like typhoid and cholera. Keeping surroundings free of stagnant water directly reduces mosquito breeding and, with it, vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue. None of these habits are complicated, but together they prevent more illness than any single medicine, which is exactly why public health campaigns keep repeating them.
