Why This Chapter Matters

This is a topic where static facts (names of parks, types of pollution) meet dynamic facts (recent conservation announcements), so a strong static base makes it much easier to slot in new information later.
The biggest mistake aspirants make here is treating "environment" as a vague, feel-good topic and skimming it. The exam does not ask you to write an essay on saving the planet; it asks precise questions like which gas causes the greenhouse effect most, which national park protects the one-horned rhinoceros, or what BOD stands for in water pollution. This chapter gives you exactly that precision: clear definitions, specific examples, and the numbers examiners actually ask about.
1. Ecosystem Basics
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals, microorganisms) interacting with each other and with their non-living surroundings (sunlight, air, water, soil) within a defined area. It can be as large as a forest or an ocean, or as small as a pond or even a single decaying log.
