Here is a fact that surprises most first-time Group D aspirants: the Science and GK questions asked in this exam are, on the whole, simpler and more direct than the ones asked in RRB NTPC. Not easier syllabus, simpler phrasing. NTPC often twists a fact into a tricky, multi-layered question designed to trip up graduates who think they already know the answer. Group D tends to ask the fact more or less straight. That single difference should completely change how you revise, and most aspirants never realise it, so they over-prepare for tricks that rarely show up and under-prepare on raw factual volume, which is exactly what does show up.

The biggest mistake in this phase of preparation is not laziness. It is bad time allocation caused by comparing yourself to the wrong kind of aspirant. Many Group D candidates are working part-time, doing PET training, managing family responsibilities, or studying after a full day of physical labour. A study plan copied from an NTPC or SSC CGL topper's blog, built for someone with six uninterrupted hours a day, will collapse within two weeks for a Group D aspirant with two available hours. This chapter gives you a plan built for the reality most Group D candidates actually live in, plus revision techniques specifically suited to memorising large volumes of scattered facts under time pressure.

1. How Group D Questions Differ From NTPC — And Why It Matters for Your Revision

RRB NTPC recruits for graduate-level posts and its aspirant pool skews toward candidates who have studied a broader range of subjects at degree level. Its General Awareness section often blends static facts with layered current-affairs context, sometimes asking you to connect a scheme name to its year, its ministry, and a recent amendment all in one question. Group D, recruiting from a 10th-pass and ITI-qualified pool, keeps its Science and GK questions closer to direct recall: naming a scientist, identifying a unit of measurement, matching a disease to its cause, stating a basic chemical formula.

This does not mean Group D is "easy" in absolute terms. It means the difficulty sits in the volume of facts you must know, not in how deviously each individual question is worded. Your job is not to become clever at spotting exam tricks; your job is to know more facts, cleanly and correctly, than the next candidate.

Think of it like two different kinds of cooking tests. NTPC is like being asked to cook one complicated dish perfectly, where a small mistake in one step ruins the whole thing. Group D is like being asked to correctly name fifty different spices laid out in front of you. You do not need advanced technique. You need to have actually seen and remembered each spice before. Memory hook: "BEDS" for the four most-tested human body systems in Group D life science — Blood (circulatory), Eating (digestive), Dreathing, meant to be read as "breathing" but held in the acronym as a deliberate memory jolt because odd spellings stick better than correct ones, and Signals (nervous system). If "BEDS" feels odd, that oddness is the point — you will remember an odd phrase longer than a neat one.

3. A Realistic Study Timeline for Working and First-Generation Aspirants

Assume you have a typical runway of four to six months before your CBT, which is common for Group D cycles once the notification and exam pattern are known. Assume also, realistically, that you can commit somewhere between two and four hours of focused study on most days, with some days offering less because of work, family duties, or PET training. Here is a phase-based plan that respects that reality rather than fighting it.

Phase 1 (Weeks 1–4): Foundation and Diagnosis

Do not start by solving mock tests. Start by finding out what you already know and what you do not. Spend the first week reading through the Class 10 level Science topics quickly, marking every topic where you feel shaky. In parallel, begin PET training now, even if lightly — 20 to 30 minutes of jogging and basic bodyweight exercises three to four times a week. Exam trap: A very common failure here is students who "read" a topic once and mentally file it as done. Reading once creates recognition, not recall. You will recognise a fact when you see it in a book. You need to recall it cold, from memory, when it is disguised inside four multiple-choice options designed to look similar. Phase 3 (Weeks 13–18): Integration and Mock Practice

If mornings are impossible because of work shifts, an evening slot works too, as long as it is fixed and repeated rather than squeezed in whenever convenient.

Exam trap: Do not schedule intense physical training and your heaviest study session back to back with zero gap. A short break of even 15 to 20 minutes between the two lets your body and mind reset, and prevents the fatigue from one activity from silently sabotaging focus in the other.

For working aspirants specifically, weekends deserve deliberate design rather than being treated as "extra time to catch up." Use one weekend day for a longer PET simulation session (the full running distance plus weight-carry, back to back, exactly as the real PET will demand) and the other for a full-length mock CBT under timed conditions. This turns your two available weekend days into the two highest-value activities in your entire week, rather than losing them to unstructured catch-up reading that rarely happens as planned.

5A. Using Limited Resources Well

Not every Group D aspirant has access to expensive coaching or a personal laptop, and this chapter would be incomplete without addressing that honestly. The good news is that Group D's fact-heavy, school-level syllabus is unusually well suited to low-cost, self-directed preparation. A single reliable Class 10 level Science textbook, read carefully topic by topic, covers the overwhelming majority of what the Physics, Chemistry, and Life Science portions actually test. You do not need six different reference books; you need one dependable source, read thoroughly and revised repeatedly, plus a habit of daily newspaper or news-app reading for current affairs.

If a smartphone is your only device, use it deliberately rather than passively. Short, focused sessions of 15 to 20 minutes on a GK app or current-affairs summary, fitted into commute time or breaks, add up meaningfully over months, far more than an occasional two-hour session that happens once a week. Voice notes are another underused tool: record yourself explaining a topic in your own words and play it back later during a commute or chore, turning otherwise unproductive time into passive revision.

Exam trap: Do not fall into the trap of collecting more and more study material without finishing any of it. A common pattern among anxious aspirants is downloading dozens of PDFs and notes from different sources, skimming each once, and finishing none properly. One well-revised source beats five half-read ones, every single time, because the exam rewards depth of recall, not breadth of material collected.

Many Group D aspirants prepare alongside friends from their village, hostel, or local coaching batch, and this can be genuinely useful if structured well.
