Why This Chapter Matters

Current science and technology is one of the highest-yield, fastest-changing zones in the General Awareness section, and SSC CGL, CHSL, and RRB exams typically draw three to six questions from developments in the twelve to eighteen months before the exam date. This is also the chapter where aspirants lose the most avoidable marks, not because the science is hard, but because they memorise a single headline fact and get tripped up the moment the exam rephrases it — asking for the launch vehicle instead of the mission name, or the agency instead of the country.

The single biggest mistake here is treating "current affairs" as a list of one-line facts to be crammed a week before the exam. Names and mission numbers change fast, but the underlying capability — what a mission proved India could do, what a defence system protects against, what a technology actually enables — stays stable and lets you reason out an answer even if you have forgotten the exact date. This chapter is written to build that underlying understanding first, then attach the specific facts to it, and it is deliberately phrased around what is confirmed and settled rather than around numbers that might shift after this book goes to print. Wherever a detail is still evolving, note the trend and the direction, not a number that could go stale.

1. India's Space Programme — Recent Missions

India's Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), headquartered in Bengaluru, has moved through a sequence of missions in the past few years that together mark a shift from proving basic capability to building sustained, ambitious programmes: lunar landing, solar observation, and human spaceflight preparation.

Chandrayaan Missions

Akash is India's indigenous surface-to-air missile system for medium-range air defence, already inducted into service and exported to friendly countries. Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has moved from a niche research topic to a mainstream policy and economic priority in India. The government has pushed initiatives under the broad umbrella of the IndiaAI Mission, aimed at building domestic AI computing infrastructure, supporting Indian-language AI models, and encouraging AI adoption across governance, agriculture, health, and education.

A recurring exam-relevant distinction: Generative AI refers to AI systems that create new content, text, images, audio, based on patterns learned from large amounts of existing data, as opposed to earlier AI systems that mainly classified or predicted from fixed categories. They serve fundamentally different medical purposes even though both fall under biotechnology.

DRDO, already mentioned for missile development, similarly spans a wide range of laboratories working on everything from radar systems to military medicine.

India has also been building domestic capability in semiconductor manufacturing, historically a sector where India had minimal domestic fabrication capacity despite strong chip design talent. 6. How to Revise Current Science and Technology Without Burning Out

Most aspirants treat current affairs as an endless, ever-growing pile of facts, which is exactly why it feels exhausting. A better approach is to sort every news item you read into one of three buckets: mission or programme names (Chandrayaan, Gaganyaan, IndiaAI Mission), the organisation behind it (ISRO, DRDO, CSIR), and the core capability it demonstrates (soft lunar landing, intercontinental missile range, real-time digital payments at scale). Once a fact is sorted this way, you can reconstruct it under exam pressure even if you have forgotten the exact wording of a headline, the same way a librarian who knows the shelving system can locate a book without having memorised its exact spine label.

A second habit worth building is distinguishing between a "flagship" fact, one so central it is unlikely to change (Chandrayaan-3 landed near the lunar south pole; BrahMos is an India-Russia joint venture) and a "moving" fact, one likely to be updated before your exam (the exact number of 5G-covered districts, the latest defence export figures, the current status of a still-in-progress mission). Spend most of your revision time on flagship facts, since they carry a much higher probability of appearing unchanged on the actual paper, and treat moving facts as a final, quick top-up check closer to exam day rather than something to memorise months in advance.

Finally, resist the temptation to read current affairs passively, scrolling through a news digest without pausing. After reading about any mission or technology, try to answer three questions in your own words without looking back: what problem did this solve, which organisation or country did it, and how is it different from the thing it's most often confused with. This mirrors exactly how SSC frames its "exam trap" style questions, testing whether you can distinguish a mission from a similarly named one rather than simply testing whether you recognise a name in isolation.
