Why This Chapter Matters
Environment and Ecology quietly supplies 3 to 5 questions in SSC CGL's General Awareness paper nearly every attempt, and it overlaps heavily with Geography and Current Affairs, so mastering this chapter pays off twice. It is also one of the friendliest chapters in the whole syllabus, because the facts are logically connected rather than randomly listed — once you understand how an ecosystem actually functions, half the "GK" questions about pollution, biodiversity, and climate treaties answer themselves.
The single biggest mistake aspirants make is treating every international agreement as interchangeable — mixing up what the Kyoto Protocol committed countries to versus what the Paris Agreement committed them to, or confusing the Montreal Protocol (which deals with the ozone layer, not general climate change) with either of them. A second common trap is national park versus wildlife sanctuary versus biosphere reserve — students use these terms as synonyms when the exam treats them as legally distinct categories with different rules. Keep that distinction sharp as you read, because it resurfaces in almost every static GK compilation.
1. Ecosystem Basics
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals, microbes) interacting with each other and with their non-living surroundings (soil, water, air, sunlight) as one functional unit. Think of a pond in your village: fish, frogs, insects, algae, the water itself, the mud at the bottom, sunlight filtering through — all of it working together as a single system where nothing exists in isolation. Remove the frogs and the insect population explodes; remove the algae and the fish starve. That interdependence is the entire idea of ecology in one sentence.
Every ecosystem has two components:
- Biotic components: all living organisms — producers, consumers, decomposers
- Abiotic components: non-living factors — temperature, sunlight, water, soil, minerals
Producers (autotrophs) make their own food, mainly green plants and algae through photosynthesis. Consumers (heterotrophs) depend on other organisms for food, split further into primary consumers (herbivores, eating plants directly), secondary consumers (carnivores eating herbivores), and tertiary consumers (top predators eating other carnivores). Decomposers — bacteria and fungi — break down dead organisms and waste, returning nutrients to the soil so producers can use them again.

A food chain is the straight-line sequence of who eats whom: grass → grasshopper → frog → snake → eagle. A food web is the more realistic, interconnected version, where multiple food chains overlap because most organisms eat more than one thing.
Exam trap: Students confuse "food chain" (a simple straight sequence) with "food web" (the full network of overlapping chains). A question describing multiple predator-prey links crossing each other is testing "food web," not "food chain."
Energy in an ecosystem flows in only one direction — from the sun to producers to consumers to decomposers — and at each step, roughly 90% of energy is lost as heat, with only about 10% transferred to the next trophic level. This is called the 10% law, proposed by Raymond Lindeman, and it explains why food chains rarely extend beyond four or five links; there simply isn't enough energy left by the fifth level to support another one.

Exam trap: Students sometimes assume every protected area in India automatically counts as a "hotspot." A hotspot is a broad biogeographic classification based on endemism and threat level; it is not the same category as a national park or a wildlife sanctuary, which are legal protection designations covering much smaller areas.
3. Types and Causes of Environmental Pollution
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or energy into the environment, causing damage to living organisms or the environment itself.
Air pollution: caused by vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, burning of fossil fuels, and crop residue burning (a major contributor to the seasonal smog seen in Delhi-NCR every winter). Key pollutants tested: Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and ground-level ozone. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in India runs from 0 to 500, and anything above 400 is classified as "severe."
Water pollution: caused by untreated sewage, industrial effluents, agricultural runoff containing pesticides and fertilizers, and plastic waste. Eutrophication — a term worth remembering precisely — is the excessive growth of algae in water bodies due to nutrient overload (mainly nitrates and phosphates from fertilizer runoff), which depletes oxygen in the water and kills fish and other aquatic life.
Soil pollution: caused by excessive chemical pesticides and fertilizers, improper disposal of industrial and municipal waste, and mining activities that strip topsoil.
Noise pollution: unwanted or excessive sound, measured in decibels (dB), from traffic, construction, and industry, that affects hearing and mental health over prolonged exposure.
Exam trap: PM2.5 and PM10 are frequently swapped in questions. PM2.5 refers to particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, and it is more dangerous precisely because it is small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream. PM10 (up to 10 micrometres) is larger and gets filtered more easily by the nose and throat. Remember: the smaller the number, the deeper it travels, the more harmful it is.
Biomagnification is another regularly tested term: harmful substances like pesticides (notably DDT) accumulate in increasing concentrations as they move up the food chain, because each predator eats many prey containing small amounts, concentrating the toxin further at each level. This is why apex predators like eagles and big fish carry the highest toxin loads, even though they were never directly sprayed with the chemical.
4. Climate Change and Global Warming
Global warming refers to the long-term rise in Earth's average surface temperature, driven mainly by the greenhouse effect — certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat radiated from the Earth's surface, similar to how a glass greenhouse traps warmth for growing plants even in cold weather. This effect is natural and necessary at normal levels (without it, Earth would be far too cold for life), but excess greenhouse gases from human activity have intensified it beyond the planet's natural balance.
The main greenhouse gases, in rough order of contribution from human activity:
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂): from burning fossil fuels, deforestation — the single largest contributor
- Methane (CH₄): from livestock digestion, paddy fields, landfills — far more potent per molecule than CO₂ but shorter-lived
- Nitrous oxide (N₂O): from fertilizer use and industrial processes
- Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): from old refrigerants and aerosols, also responsible for ozone depletion
- Water vapour: the most abundant greenhouse gas by volume, but it responds to warming rather than driving it directly
Climate change is the broader, longer-term shift in weather patterns (temperature, rainfall, storm frequency) caused by this warming, not just a rise in thermometer readings. Effects tested regularly: melting glaciers and polar ice, rising sea levels, more frequent and intense heat waves and cyclones, shifting monsoon patterns, and coral bleaching (where warmer, more acidic oceans cause corals to expel the algae they depend on, turning them white and often killing them).
Exam trap: "Global warming" and "climate change" get used interchangeably in casual speech, but exam questions sometimes test the distinction. Global warming is specifically about rising average temperature; climate change is the wider set of consequences that follow from it, including changes that are not simply "hotter," like erratic rainfall or stronger storms.
5. International Environmental Agreements
This is the section where precision separates a scoring student from a guessing one. Three treaties dominate this topic, and each targets a different problem.
Montreal Protocol (1987): targets ozone-depleting substances, mainly CFCs. It is widely regarded as the most successful international environmental agreement ever signed, because global CFC production has dropped dramatically since, and the ozone layer is measurably recovering. It has nothing to do with general climate change or carbon emissions directly — its sole focus is the ozone layer.
Kyoto Protocol (1997, adopted; entered into force 2005): the first major treaty that set legally binding emission-reduction targets, but only for developed countries (called Annex I countries), under the principle that industrialised nations, having historically emitted the most, should cut first. Developing countries including India had no binding targets under Kyoto.
Paris Agreement (2015, adopted at COP21; entered into force 2016): the current global framework, and unlike Kyoto, it applies to all countries, developed and developing alike, through voluntary, self-determined targets called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Its central goal is to keep global average temperature rise well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, while pursuing efforts to limit the rise to 1.5°C.

If a question says "legally binding targets only for developed nations," the answer is Kyoto; if it says "applies to all nations through voluntary pledges," the answer is Paris.
Other agreements worth knowing: the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, 1992), adopted at the Rio Earth Summit, focused on conserving biodiversity, sustainable use of its components, and fair sharing of benefits from genetic resources. The Ramsar Convention (1971) is an international treaty for the conservation of wetlands, and India has designated numerous Ramsar sites (wetlands of international importance) under it. The Basel Convention controls the transboundary movement of hazardous waste.
