Chapter 8: Industries, GI-Tagged Products, and Development Initiatives
8.1 Industrial Profile
Uttar Pradesh's industrial base spans traditional handicrafts, agro-processing, leather, textiles, and — in recent years — a growing electronics and IT-hardware manufacturing footprint anchored around Noida and Greater Noida. Kanpur has historically been known as an industrial and leather-manufacturing hub, sometimes referred to informally as the "Manchester of the East" for its textile heritage.
8.2 One District One Product (ODOP)
Uttar Pradesh pioneered the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, later adopted as a national model, under which each of the state's districts is assigned a distinctive local product for focused promotion, branding, and export support. Examples include Bhadohi's carpets, Moradabad's brassware, Firozabad's glassware, Kanpur's leather goods, Lucknow's Chikankari embroidery, and Varanasi's Banarasi silk sarees.
8.3 GI-Tagged Products
Uttar Pradesh holds Geographical Indication (GI) tags for numerous products, including Banarasi sarees (Varanasi), Chikankari embroidery (Lucknow), Firozabad glassware, Kannauj perfume (Ittar), Moradabad metal craft, Bhadohi carpets, Allahabad surkha guava, Malihabadi Dussehri mango (Lucknow/Malihabad), and Amroha's Dholak (musical instrument craft), among others.
8.4 Agriculture
UP is India's largest producer of foodgrains among states and a leading producer of sugarcane, wheat, and potatoes. The state's fertile Gangetic plains support intensive agriculture, and UP consistently ranks among the top states for sugarcane and sugar production, supporting a substantial sugar-mill industry, particularly in western UP.
8.5 Expressway and Infrastructure Development
UP has invested heavily in expressway infrastructure, including the Yamuna Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and the Ganga Expressway, aimed at improving connectivity, attracting industrial investment along expressway corridors, and reducing travel times across the state's vast geography.
8.6 Defence Industrial Corridor
The UP Defence Industrial Corridor, spanning nodes including Agra, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Kanpur, and Lucknow, aims to establish UP as a hub for domestic defence manufacturing, attracting both public-sector and private investment in defence production.
8.7 IT and Electronics Manufacturing
Noida and Greater Noida have emerged as significant hubs for electronics manufacturing and IT/ITeS services, benefiting from proximity to Delhi-NCR and dedicated industrial policy incentives for electronics and semiconductor-adjacent manufacturing.
