4.1 The Revolt of 1857 — UP as Epicentre

Uttar Pradesh (then part of the North-Western Provinces and Awadh) was a principal epicentre of the Revolt of 1857. Meerut is where the revolt formally began (10 May 1857), sparked by sepoy grievances including the greased-cartridge controversy. Kanpur saw major uprisings led by Nana Sahib and Tatya Tope, alongside the notable role of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi (whose kingdom lay in present-day UP), a symbol of resistance still central to Indian nationalist memory. Lucknow saw a prolonged and famous siege of the British Residency. Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, was declared the symbolic overall leader of the revolt, though his actual power was limited.

4.2 Chauri Chaura Incident (1922)

The Chauri Chaura incident, in Gorakhpur district, occurred on 4 February 1922, when a violent clash led to the deaths of several policemen at a police station during the Non-Cooperation Movement. Mahatma Gandhi, deeply disturbed by the violence, called off the Non-Cooperation Movement nationally as a direct consequence — a landmark and frequently tested cause-and-effect fact in Indian freedom-movement history.

4.3 Kakori Conspiracy (1925)

The Kakori Conspiracy/Kakori Train Robbery (9 August 1925), near Lucknow, was a landmark revolutionary action by the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), involving figures like Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Nath Lahiri, and Roshan Singh — several of whom were later executed by the British, making Kakori a major symbol of the armed revolutionary strand of the freedom struggle.

4.4 Other Freedom Movement Landmarks

Allahabad (Prayagraj) served as an important political and intellectual centre of the freedom movement, home to the Anand Bhawan (the Nehru family residence, later donated to the nation) and a key site associated with Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru. Varanasi hosted the founding of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916, a major institution-building milestone of the nationalist era.

4.5 Formation and Reorganisation of the State

The present state traces its administrative lineage to the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, formally constituted in 1902 and simplified to "United Provinces" in 1937. On 24 January 1950, with the adoption of the Indian Constitution, the state was renamed Uttar Pradesh. On 9 November 2000, Uttar Pradesh was bifurcated to create the state of Uttarakhand (initially named Uttaranchal, later renamed Uttarakhand in 2007), separating the Himalayan hill districts from the plains — the same broad wave of state reorganisation (alongside Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh) that reshaped India's map in 2000.
