6.1 Agriculture

Uttar Pradesh is India's leading producer of sugarcane and a major producer of wheat and rice (India's largest wheat-producing state, and among the top rice producers), owing to its extensive, fertile alluvial plains and dense irrigation network. It is also India's largest producer of potatoes and a major producer of pulses, oilseeds, and mangoes — UP's Malihabad region (near Lucknow) is particularly famous for mango cultivation (notably the Dussehri variety). Gorakhpur, Deoria, and other eastern UP districts are also known for significant sugarcane cultivation, alongside the western UP sugar belt (Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur).

6.2 Industries

UP has a diversified industrial base including sugar mills (concentrated in western and eastern UP), leather and footwear (Kanpur and Agra are major national hubs, with Kanpur historically dubbed the "Manchester of the East" for its textile and leather industries), carpets (Bhadohi/Mirzapur region, a major export hub with GI-tagged carpet weaving traditions), brassware (Moradabad, known as "Peetal Nagri" or Brass City, a major exporter), glassware (Firozabad, known as the "Suhaag Nagri"/bangle city for its glass bangle industry), and handicrafts/handloom (Varanasi's silk sarees — Banarasi silk — are internationally renowned and GI-tagged).

6.3 Government Schemes (Illustrative)

UP has implemented several state-specific schemes alongside central ones — examples of the kind of scheme-name fact commonly tested include the "One District One Product" (ODOP) initiative (promoting a distinctive local product from each of UP's 75 districts, a scheme later adopted at the national level too) and various agricultural, infrastructure, and welfare schemes. Candidates should verify current scheme names against the latest official notification, since branding can change with policy updates.

6.4 Transport and Connectivity

UP's transport network includes major airports at Lucknow (Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport), Varanasi (Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport), Kushinagar International Airport, and Noida International Airport (Jewar). The state is served by extensive expressway infrastructure, including the Yamuna Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, and Purvanchal Expressway, reflecting a major state focus on expressway-led connectivity in recent years. Major railway zones serving UP include North Central Railway (headquartered at Prayagraj) and Northern Railway (headquartered in Delhi but serving large parts of western UP).
