1. General Physical Properties of Metals
- Lustrous (shiny), malleable (can be hammered into sheets), ductile (can be drawn into wires), good conductors of heat and electricity, generally solid at room temperature (exception: Mercury, liquid).
- Sonorous (produce a ringing sound when struck) — hence used in bells.
- High density and high melting/boiling points (exceptions: sodium, potassium are soft and low-melting).
- Silver and copper are the best conductors of electricity (silver > copper > gold > aluminium).
2. General Chemical Properties
- Metals lose electrons to form positive ions (cations) — they are electropositive.
- Reaction with oxygen: form basic oxides, e.g., 4Na + O₂ → 2Na₂O (metal oxides are generally basic; Al₂O₃ and ZnO are amphoteric — react with both acids and bases).
- Reaction with water: reactive metals (Na, K, Ca) react vigorously/violently with cold water releasing H₂; less reactive metals (Mg, Al, Zn, Fe) react with steam; Cu, Ag, Au do not react with water at all.
- Reaction with dilute acids: most metals release H₂ gas, except metals below hydrogen in the reactivity series (Cu, Ag, Au, Pt).
- Reaction with each other's salt solutions: a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from its salt solution (basis of the reactivity series).
3. The Reactivity Series (Most to Least Reactive)
K > Na > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Pb > (H) > Cu > Hg > Ag > Au > Pt
Mnemonic commonly used: "Please Stop Calling Me A Zebra, Instead Try Hunting Cheap Hares (Silver And Platinum-Gold)" — corresponds to Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Zinc, Iron, Tin, Hydrogen, Copper, mercury, Silver, Gold, Platinum. (Any equivalent mnemonic works — the order itself is what's tested.)
Significance: metals above hydrogen displace it from acids; metals higher in the series are extracted by more energy-intensive methods (electrolysis for K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al; reduction for Fe, Zn, Pb, Cu; found native for Ag, Au, Pt).
4. Metals, Non-metals, and Metalloids
- Metalloids (properties between metals and non-metals): Boron, Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Antimony, Tellurium, Polonium.
- Non-metals important for comparison: generally poor conductors (except graphite), brittle if solid, form acidic or neutral oxides.
- Exceptions to remember: Graphite (a non-metal form of carbon) conducts electricity; Iodine is a lustrous non-metal; Diamond (carbon) is the hardest natural substance but a non-metal and non-conductor.

- Minerals: naturally occurring compounds of metals in the earth's crust.

- Moderately reactive metals (Fe, Zn, Pb, Cu) are extracted by reduction with carbon/carbon monoxide in a blast furnace.
- Least reactive metals (Ag, Au, Pt, Hg) occur in free/native state or are extracted by simple heating.
6. Rusting and Corrosion

- Rusting of iron: Fe reacts with oxygen and moisture to form hydrated iron(III) oxide (Fe₂O₃·xH₂O), a reddish-brown flaky substance.
- Conditions needed: presence of both oxygen AND moisture (water) — absence of either prevents rusting.
- Prevention methods: painting, oiling/greasing, galvanising (coating with zinc), chrome plating, alloying (making stainless steel), tin plating (used for food cans).
- Galvanisation: coating iron/steel with a layer of zinc to prevent rusting — zinc corrodes preferentially (sacrificial protection) even if the coating is scratched.

8. Special Notes and Frequently Tested Facts
- Most abundant metal in Earth's crust: Aluminium. Most abundant metal overall in Earth (including core): Iron.
- Most malleable and ductile metal: Gold.
- Metal that exists as liquid at room temperature: Mercury.
