1. Digestive System

- Path: Mouth → Oesophagus → Stomach → Small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) → Large intestine (colon) → Rectum → Anus.
- Mouth: Saliva contains salivary amylase (ptyalin) which begins starch digestion.
- Stomach: Secretes gastric juice containing HCl (kills bacteria, activates pepsinogen to pepsin) and pepsin (digests proteins). Stomach pH is highly acidic (~1.5–2).
- Liver: Largest gland/organ in the body; produces bile (stored in gallbladder), which emulsifies fats (breaks them into smaller droplets) — bile does not digest fat itself.
- Pancreas: A dual-function gland — exocrine part secretes pancreatic juice (trypsin for proteins, amylase for starch, lipase for fats) into the duodenum; endocrine part (Islets of Langerhans) secretes insulin and glucagon.
- Small intestine: Main site of digestion and absorption; lined with villi and microvilli to increase surface area.
- Large intestine: Absorbs water and forms faeces; houses beneficial gut bacteria that synthesise vitamin K and some B vitamins.
2. Circulatory (Cardiovascular) System

- Heart: Four chambers — 2 atria (upper, receive blood) and 2 ventricles (lower, pump blood out). Human heart is myogenic (initiates its own beat via the sinoatrial node, the "pacemaker").
- Double circulation: Blood passes through the heart twice per cycle — pulmonary circulation (heart↔lungs) and systemic circulation (heart↔body).
- Blood vessels: Arteries carry blood away from the heart (usually oxygenated, except pulmonary artery); Veins carry blood to the heart (usually deoxygenated, except pulmonary vein); Capillaries are the smallest vessels where exchange occurs.
- Blood composition: Plasma (55%, mostly water + proteins), Red blood cells/RBCs/erythrocytes (carry oxygen via haemoglobin, biconcave, no nucleus in mammals, made in bone marrow, lifespan ~120 days), White blood cells/WBCs/leukocytes (immunity, several types — neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), Platelets/thrombocytes (blood clotting).
- Blood groups: ABO system (A, B, AB, O) and Rh factor (+/−). O-negative is the universal donor; AB-positive is the universal recipient. Discovered by Karl Landsteiner.
- Blood pressure: Normal ~120/80 mmHg (systolic/diastolic).
- Lymphatic system: Runs parallel to blood circulation, returns excess tissue fluid to blood, houses lymph nodes central to immunity.
3. Respiratory System
- Path: Nostrils → Pharynx → Larynx (voice box) → Trachea (windpipe) → Bronchi → Bronchioles → Alveoli (site of gas exchange in lungs).
- Alveoli: Tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries; thin, moist walls allow O₂ to diffuse into blood and CO₂ to diffuse out. Human lungs contain ~300 million alveoli.
- Mechanism: Diaphragm and intercostal muscles control inhalation (diaphragm contracts and flattens, chest cavity expands) and exhalation (diaphragm relaxes and domes upward).
- Gas exchange: Oxygen binds haemoglobin to form oxyhaemoglobin; CO₂ is transported mostly as bicarbonate ions in plasma.
- Normal breathing rate: ~12–18 breaths/minute in a resting adult.
4. Nervous System
- Divisions: Central Nervous System (CNS: brain + spinal cord) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS: all nerves connecting CNS to the body); PNS further divides into somatic (voluntary) and autonomic (involuntary — sympathetic and parasympathetic) systems.
- Brain parts: Cerebrum (largest part, controls voluntary actions, thought, memory, divided into two hemispheres), Cerebellum (balance and coordination of movement), Medulla oblongata (controls involuntary actions — heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure).

- Reflex action: An automatic, rapid, involuntary response to a stimulus, controlled by the spinal cord via a "reflex arc" without waiting for the brain to process it (e.g., withdrawing hand from a hot object).
5. Skeletal and Muscular System
- Adult human skeleton has 206 bones (a newborn has about 270–300, many of which fuse as the child grows).
- Largest bone: Femur (thigh bone). Smallest bone: Stapes (in the middle ear).
- Skeleton functions: support, protection (e.g., ribcage protects heart/lungs, skull protects brain), movement (with muscles), blood cell production (in bone marrow), mineral storage (calcium, phosphorus).

- Path: Kidneys → Ureters → Urinary bladder (stores urine) → Urethra (expels urine).
- Other excretory organs: Skin (sweat — removes water, salts, small amounts of urea), Lungs (remove CO₂).
- Dialysis is an artificial method of filtering blood when kidneys fail.
7. Reproductive System (Brief)
- Male: Testes produce sperm and testosterone; sperm travel via vas deferens.
- Female: Ovaries produce eggs (ova) and oestrogen/progesterone; fertilisation occurs in the fallopian tube; the fertilised egg implants in the uterus.
- Human gestation period: approximately 280 days (~9 months/40 weeks).
