1. Core Definitions

  • Ecology: the scientific study of interactions between organisms and their environment.
  • Habitat: the natural physical environment where an organism lives.
  • Population: all individuals of one species living in a given area at a given time.
  • Community: all populations of different species living and interacting in a given area.
  • Ecosystem: a community of organisms interacting with each other and with their physical (abiotic) environment, functioning as a unit — term coined by A.G. Tansley (1935).
  • Biosphere: the global sum of all ecosystems, the zone of life on Earth.

2. Components of an Ecosystem

  • Biotic components: all living organisms — producers, consumers, decomposers.
  • Abiotic components: non-living factors — sunlight, temperature, water, soil, air, minerals.

3. Food Chains and Food Webs

  • Food chain: a linear sequence showing transfer of energy from one organism to another (Producer → Herbivore → Carnivore → Top carnivore).
  • Food web: an interconnected network of multiple overlapping food chains — more realistic representation of nature since most organisms eat more than one type of food.
  • 10% Law (Lindeman's Law): only about 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next; the rest (~90%) is lost as heat/used in metabolism. This is why food chains rarely have more than 4–5 trophic levels, and why top carnivores are always fewer in number.
  • Ecological pyramids: Pyramid of numbers, Pyramid of biomass, Pyramid of energy (energy pyramid is always upright, unlike the others which can sometimes be inverted, e.g., a pyramid of numbers in a tree-based ecosystem).

4. Biogeochemical Cycles

The nitrogen cycle

  • Carbon cycle: CO₂ is fixed by photosynthesis into organic matter, released back via respiration, decomposition, and combustion.
  • Nitrogen cycle: Atmospheric N₂ (78% of air, but unusable directly by most organisms) is converted to usable forms by nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., Rhizobium in root nodules of leguminous plants, and cyanobacteria) → nitrification → used by plants → returned via decomposition and denitrification.
  • Water cycle (hydrological cycle): Evaporation → Condensation → Precipitation → Collection/runoff, continuously recycling Earth's water.
  • Oxygen cycle: linked closely with the carbon cycle via photosynthesis (releases O₂) and respiration/combustion (consumes O₂).

5. Types of Ecosystems

  • Natural ecosystems: Forest, Grassland, Desert, Pond, Ocean, River (further divided into terrestrial and aquatic).
  • Artificial/Man-made ecosystems: Cropland, Aquarium, Garden.
  • Biomes: large-scale ecosystems defined by climate and dominant vegetation — Tropical rainforest, Desert, Grassland/Savanna, Temperate forest, Taiga (coniferous forest), Tundra.

6. Biodiversity

  • Biodiversity: the variety of life at genetic, species, and ecosystem levels.
  • Biodiversity hotspot: a region with exceptionally high species richness and endemism, but under significant threat — India has 4 recognised hotspots: Himalaya, Indo-Burma, Western Ghats-Sri Lanka, and Sundaland (Nicobar Islands).
  • India is one of 17 "megadiverse countries" in the world.
  • Endemic species: found naturally only in one specific geographic region and nowhere else.
  • Keystone species: a species that has a disproportionately large effect on its ecosystem relative to its abundance (removing it can collapse the ecosystem).
