9.1 Temple Architecture — Structural Vocabulary

  • Garbhagriha: The innermost sanctum housing the main deity, typically small and dark, symbolising the womb/cosmic centre.
  • Mandapa: A pillared hall preceding the sanctum, used for congregation, ritual, and (in larger temples) dance/music performance (Natya Mandapa); large South Indian temples often have multiple mandapas (Ardha-mandapa, Maha-mandapa).
  • Amalaka and Kalasha: The crowning elements of a Nagara shikhara — the amalaka is a ribbed, disc-shaped stone resembling an amla fruit, topped by a kalasha (pot-shaped finial).

  • True arch and dome technology: A key technical distinction often tested in exams — indigenous Indian architecture traditionally used the trabeate (post-and-lintel/corbelled) system, achieving the appearance of an arch or dome through overlapping horizontal courses of stone; Islamic architecture introduced the true arch and true dome (using voussoirs and radiating weight distribution), a structurally distinct and more materially efficient technique that allowed larger uninterrupted interior spaces.
  • Charminar (Hyderabad, built 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Golconda Sultanate): A distinctive four-minaret gateway-mosque structure, built to commemorate the end of a plague epidemic, and now an iconic symbol of Hyderabad.
